Cedar Point 2016 Talk
Oldiesmann replied to Bansheeback's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
For those wondering what "Cardboard compatible" means, it's likely a reference to Google Cardboard. However, this makes no sense, given that holding up a phone to view something while riding a coaster is extremely dangerous and against park rules. -
Given that the $9.95 deal is almost certainly not valid during the state fair, I really have to wonder where they're going with this campaign...

Whither Conneaut Lake Park Now?
Oldiesmann replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I'm sure most of the creditors aren't exactly thrilled at the idea that it could take 20 years for them to be fully paid back... -
Six Flags Great America or Holiday World
Oldiesmann replied to WindingSon's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
You can spend two days at Holiday World easily. Spend the first day riding things and enjoying the park. Spend the next day at the water park and re-riding things. There are also other things to do in the area such as Lincoln State Park (hiking trails, historical stuff related to Lincoln's years in Indiana, a lake with a beach and boat rental), Lincoln Boyhood Home (right across from the state park), Eagles Wings Zipline...). The historic former state capitol of Corydon isn't too far away, nor is the Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth (spectacular views of the Ohio River). -
Cedar Fair posts strong 2nd Quarter
Oldiesmann replied to WindingSon's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
When I went to CP a couple weeks ago, the line for Rougarou was about an hour around 7:00 on a Monday. It ended up being about a 90 minute wait due to downtime caused by a problem with one of the exit gates. It was a fun ride, but a little too much headbanging for my tastes. -
That article is hilarious... Revitalized and expanded compared to what it was prior to its closing... And Ed Hart is a visionary? I wonder if that includes Thunder Run, which is tucked away at the end of a former access road way off the beaten path...

Whither Conneaut Lake Park Now?
Oldiesmann replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
So much for having a good plan to get the park out of bankruptcy. It's a shame the park likely won't get another opportunity to find competent people to run it. -
Also note that there are 3 Arrow coasters at CP which are older than Vortex and still going strong - Cedar Creek Mine Ride (1969), Corkscrew (1976) and Gemini (1978). Properly maintained, these coasters can last quite a while.

Plus interactive maps and walking directions and wait times in the app (something I seriously missed when I visited Cedar Point earlier this month).

Indy Zoo Skyride Strands 18
Oldiesmann replied to NoChickens's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I'm wondering why it took so long for rescuers to get there after the ride stopped, considering the zoo is located on the area's main east-west road not far from downtown... -
This coming Monday (August 3rd) is Reds Day at the park. Two separate Q&A sessions involving 6 players total (3 at each session)... https://www.visitkingsisland.com/events/things-to-do/events-and-promotions/Reds-Day I was already thinking about going to the park on Monday, so this works out great. I'm guessing it will be pretty crowded though.

They're actually doing Coaster Campout events at all CF parks this year. Links and dates at http://www.greatohiocc.org/park-news. If you can make it out to California's Great America, it's only $50 per site there...

Whither Conneaut Lake Park Now?
Oldiesmann replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
It really sounds like none of the people running the park now have any more clue what they're doing than the ones who were running it before. They seem to assume they'll just magically be able to get enough money together to keep things running, but they're not really trying that hard. -
Maybe we could have a set of Cedar Point's antique cars, considering that they have two of them (I'm not entirely sure why though - anyone able to explain that?). I would love to see some again, but I don't know if anyone makes them any more. They were generally made by Arrow (the same one that made Vortex, The Bat and Adventure Express), which went belly up in 2002. S&S did buy out the assets of Arrow, but mostly coaster-related things (parts, the runaway mine train design, etc.).
-
Also note the lack of seatbelts on Adventure Express.

I doubt CF wants to pay what Ted Turner would want for Looney Tunes licensing. I also wouldn't be surprised if SIX has some sort of "we have exclusive rights to use the characters in our parks" deal.

Skunks seem to be a longstanding problem at KI. When I worked at the park in 2005, a family of skunks took up residence under what's now Peanuts 500 (don't remember what it was called at the time). One night they decided to make an appearance before the park was closed. Fortunately nobody got sprayed, though we did get questioned by our manager as to why we left the cars scattered around the track. Eventually they hired a trapper, who relocated them to the woods somewhere.

Both the Tennessean and kentucky.com (Lexington Herald-Leader) are reporting that 12 were injured ("according to authorities"), but the Bowling Green paper's article still says 8 were injured, so I'm not sure who's correct here. Either way, this should not have happened, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a lawsuit and/or fines coming from this.

They've also got Beech Bend, but given what happened there yesterday I don't know that I'd be too eager to visit that park right now.
