  2. Maybe they just had a bad day when YoungStud was there because the crew was distracted by Stud's pythons.

  4. Just so everyone knows, records can come and go, but a good ride last a long time. So, it does not have to be a record breaker (even though that would be nice) in order for it to be a good ride.

  7. Have to hand it to the marketing team there...they made that coaster actually sound high-tech and thrilling when in reality it was just an relocated old shuttle loop made from parts of two old shuttle loops.

  8. Diamondback doesn't have a turnstile. The driver counts empty seats and there is a capacity record for the whole day on the panel view. I just like how Diamondback gets criticized for having a "slow crew" when they have beaten the manufacturers max capacity more than once.

  13. Well, I read the Late 2012 version of the Ed Hart proposal (PDF format) to the state last night...I am no longer thinking this will be an Intamin Impulse, because on one of the "new ride location" diagrams, there was a map drawing of GL's old location and one of those "red lines that show layout" for the new ride...it didn't take much room, but it appeared to at the very least be a full-circuit coaster of some sort, apparently with a helix. So, unless plans have changed, this appears to not be some shuttle coaster of any kind...though I could be wrong. Also, there were pictures of Ed Hart's proposed waterpark expansion's slides that will be going in Chang's old spot along with the Action River- I did a quick search and was able to find a picture of them on google: I have to say, based on the slides I have been on at Holiday World...these look awesome, save the fact I may be forced to haul an inner tube up 75+ feet of stairs. As for Kings Island's new-for-2014 coaster being superior to KK's...I'd say there's a 90% chance it will be, since the Kings Island ride is probably going to be massive and cost over $20,000,000+ and this will either be some small/used attraction...unless Ed Hart has somehow gotten this coaster used for $7 million... In which case, I will already be buying one of those $60 Kentucky Kingdom season passes when the park opens . But even though this ride could fit in KK, I don't see it selling for under $10 million at the cheapest...so I doubt it. Ed Hart has also said this ride would be "new", and since he didn't call GL new when it was added in 2003, I don't think this is a re-location, but some form of relatively cheap new coaster. And, as Terpy did just bring up (I was taking forever making this post BTW and this topic got fairly active)...yeah, there is still a chance KK won't be able to re-open at all, or will fail horribly and only last a few seasons at most. Then you have the whole Holiday World fiasco, will Lori Koch be willing to build onto and add to a park she might not even own depending the outcome of the court battle (possibly hurting the park)? Meanwhile, Kings Island is about to add a new monster roller coaster, and for now is under stable management...so many possible outcomes from this scenario...head hurts now...

  18. Seems as though Intimidator 305 has been closed since Monday due to need for a custom gear box part for the lift. Also seems like there may be an issue with getting the part into the building that houses the gear box. Also the train stuck at the top may need to be taken down by a crane. Seems like I305 might be down for awhile, oh the problems for Intamins continue...Any guesses how long until it will be before its back up and running? Picture via Screamscape

  26. Note that even with the then new coaster, the park was running a BOGO with a Coke can. Cheapest season pass prices in the chain. There were reasons. Reasons that don't bode well for The New Kentucky Kingdom.

  28. Ouch. Reminds me of when Millennium Force's cable lift broke a few years ago...granted chain lifts can break too, but that rarely happens on new rides, and here's a coaster that opened in 2010...well then again even Diamondback went down several days a while back, due to a broken footer or something...

  32. It was a very crowded day. Racers was coming out of the queue, Diamondback had an hour wait, i waited 30 minutes before the ride shut down for a half an hour. we ditched the line and cane back and it was still an hour wait (which we voided by winning a "Front Of The Line" passes on the Wheel of Fortune!)

  34. Gwazi's problems stem from Busch not having expertise in or an understanding of what it takes to maintain a wooden coaster. And Gwazi was far from GCI's first coaster. It was a smooth delight when it opened.

  35. I have the same attitude towards CCI as I do Intamin. I enjoy them at other parks, but I would rather not have Kings Island acquire one. Roller coasters are not purchases, but investments. For them to be practical, both logistically and financially, they need to operate efficiently and continue to attract guests, something CCI, TGG or Intamin seem to fail to do. Cedar Fair seems to understand that as of late, which I'm happy about. Gone are the days of impractical record breakers, and taking their place are the sensible investments. I believe every time an Intamin breaks down at a Cedar Fair park (see the original post here, among others), it stands as a justification for the recent wave of B&M additions.

  36. Both GCI and B&M build premium products, and charge accordingly. CCI, in particular, had amazingly low first costs. Maintenance, on the other hand... See also Voyage. Or Hades. Or Cheetah, which was darn near unrideable in its last days. Or Villian. Life cycle costs matter, which is one reason you saw Cedar Fair buying GCI's and not CCI's, except the inherited Ghostrider. About which...

  37. ...but then...who are Intamin and RMC supposed to be!?!? And is PTC the Arrow Dynamics of the wooden coaster world? Is RCCA...Vekoma? Where do CCI and Dinn Corporation fit in!?!? And what about Harry Tarver, and all those numerous OTHER wooden coaster builders!?!? Sorry...kinda had to...

  40. So I've been thinking about this for awhile now. Mr. Hart has been building up this $7 million dollar coaster, which most of us know that $7 million won't buy a big steel coaster, but what if its a used coaster. I read somewhere a while back that FPI US LLC who owns Freestyle Music Park (formally Hard Rock Park) were discussing on liquidating the parks rides and attractions. So does anyone else think that maybe Hart struck a deal to purchase one of their coasters? Or are there any other steel coasters out there that are SBNO and still in a good salvageable condition? Just a thought......

  42. At the rate the park has been going since 2009, Action Zone is essentially the last section of the park to receive a facelift. Most of Rivertown's pathwork was relaid with brick pavers to coincide with Diamondback (as well as a new entrance plaza for Beast), the kids' area underwent yet another (although less drastic) transformation to Planet Snoopy, the entirety of Coney Mall was relaid with the same pavers as Rivertown along with Windy Seeker and DA!, our water park was gifted a brand new entrance, a second wave pool, and a new path connecting the family raft slide to the kids' water areas, all under the new moniker Soak City, and International Street has been given incremental changes to its scenery with new pavers and the removal of several large concrete planters. The only other area left relatively untouched is Oktoberfest.

  45. Life's too short to be in constant worry and paranoia. Think of each day like it's your last and make the best of it. Do what you want to do. Go where you want to go. Say "I love you" to the important people in your life. Focus on the positives and don't bear a burden of thinking bad thoughts. If someday you encounter an act of terrorism, know that there would have been nothing you could have done to stop it. When you're running through the garden, look at the beautiful flowers, not at the ugly weeds. You know the weeds exist, but to live a fulfilling life, move on from thinking the worst. Yes, you should always be on your toes ready for action in case something does happen, but just have fun and accept all life has to offer. Be thankful that a personal encounter with a terrorist attack has a very low probability in this wondrous, free country while people in the Middle East constantly wonder if each step they take will be their last. Don't grow old and look back on your life and have regrets that you didn't do something or go somewhere only because of a nagging, uncalled for worry. Live life to its fullest--no matter what--and have no regrets.

  46. Much like Flight of Fear, the "third" train is rehabbed during the current regular season to get ready for the next season. For example: trains 1 and 2 run in 2013, while train 3 is rehabbed. In 2014 trains 2 and 3 may run while train 1 is rehabbed and the pattern follows for the next years. Although it should be noted that the trains currently running are always labeled "1" and "2," but have weld marks indicating their "real" numbers. While running three trains, the ride does get increased capacity, but if the crew doesn't move fast enough that third train "sets up" on the second lift. Apparently constant set ups were causing too much stress on the lift hill motor. Even the best crews can get delays in the stations.

  47. Network, network, network. And learn, learn, learn. That's my best advice. It starts out in life with what you know and can do (training and education). It becomes, for many, who you know (networking, connections, corroboration). Later in life, it's who knows you (reputation, renown, still connections). In short, thrills connect. So go big!

  50. Take it from someone who occasionally works rides like Beast and Diamondback - when I'm in the greet position, I tend to sort of "eye" the line and update accordingly. Accurate? Somewhat. For instance, working greet at Beast, I always eye the Q inside the station before leaving for the greeter post and then I eye the lower Q's. From that, I can estimate the wait and update the sign. Generally, in the 45 minutes you are stationed there, the line changes very little - so on rides staffed by greeters (and not all greeters care or even update the signs) it can be pretty accurate. That is why I always suggest asking the greeter, simply, "is the wait time accurate". Sometimes they just don't think about updating the sign. Even though I always feel like saying "look at the sign!!!" when someone asks me that, I know that - deep down - I would do the same.
