Great America Sale Cancelled
KIfan1980 replied to bkroz's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
From the thread when the sale was announced: From the thread when the sale was cancelled: I wonder sometimes if we are too quick to give credit and/or too quick to place blame when we learn about things happening with CF. I am hopeful that the powers that be at CF did all the necessary due diligence on the deal and determined that it was in the best interest of FUN to move forward with CGA as part of the parks portfolio and then decided to work in partnership with the 49ers and Santa Clara on a solution for issues including parking. That said, you'd have thought this due diligence would have been completed prior to deciding to sell the asset - this is the area where I'd question the leadership at FUN as I'd think it better to never announce a deal than announce and then cancel (twice now). -
Universal To Close 'Jaws' Attraction
KIfan1980 replied to beastfan11's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Or maybe it was closed to allow for surveying the area for a future attraction that was being designed - just guessing. -
Can't you just imagine this in the Museum of KI History - JD's photo's as mounted 11x14 prints side by side, with Hendricks fades playing underneath on a tv screen - all surrounding a scale model of the park from the early 70's. In the next room, various signs/ride vehicles/images from rides gone by, followed by ... Sorry, here I go dreaming again - although I still say it would be an awesome attraction.

Mature trees are nice, but I-Street in '74 looked like an interesting place to be versus the walk-by it has become today. I know, there are times when I enjoy sitting by the fountains and people watching, enjoying the scenery, but I think it looks like there was more to it than that. Thanks again for the efforts of JD and Hendrick on this thread - it makes me go to the computer (v. just the iPhone) to log on to KIC every day.

Didn't ride it much, but always enjoyed the monorail and animals so would choose 1974 on this one, although I have to admit I am surprised that the track came toward what is now Action Zone as far as it did. I always thought it was further back, although the sketch in TombraiderTy's thread http://www.KICentral.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=23540&view=findpost&p=421006 seems to show it coming into the Skyflyer area (although maybe not as far as Drop Tower). You can see in this pic how The Racer's exit was originally on the opposite side Thanks - I knew someone would have a quick and correct answer. Although this picture does raise a question for me - I've talked to The Interpreter about Racer in its early years before and believe he has said that he thought at one time Racer loaded from the outside and exited from the middle of the station. This picture sure looks like it shows loading from the middle and exiting from the outside (although the exit is on the Subway/Monster side of the queue house - which I remember from my 80's visits). Final thought on the picture - another ride is shown (Tumble Bug) that unfortunately made way for a basketball game.

While a few might like it, the answer is likely no as apparently it wasn't profitable. Also remember, The Beach stopped their own winter event this year - I'm guessing it wasn't making them money either.

Agree that this is definitely one of my favorite pictures and struggle with whether I'd prefer to be in 2011 or 1974. I guess I'll take 2011 as my current park for the added thrill rides, but wish I could step back in time to 1974 at least for a day. Things I like about the 1974 picture: - The landscaping, family ride type and density, arcade/skeeball, and food option in that area really add to the old midway feel that I think would have been special to experience - I prefer The Racer in many aspects - final bunny hill (ok, this has long been a pet peeve of mine that the final drop on both Racer and Beastie were removed), color scheme, open brake runs, and things you can't really see like no seat dividers/headrests/individual restraints - Even though I don't remember them in this location, I really wish we still had the Flying Eagles One thing that I'm wondering (and hope some of the photo historians may be able to answer for me) is whether the grass islands and trees were there at opening or added sometime between 1972 and 1974. I swear I've seen photo's of this area without them (although it could have been an artist rendition for all I know).

I love this one as the flume has always been one of my favorites. A few things I noticed: - Wow has the operator booth and the support for the lift/hill changed over the years - I prefer the lack of color, the lack of a shield on the left of the lift - Although not in the picture, I think I'd prefer 1974 and knowing that the working water wheel was there to look at as well (also, not a fan of the current spitting snoopy) I can now go to bed as I've learned something new today. Must have missed this and agree with the sentiment.

Best bet would be to find someone who works for Cincinnati Financial and see when their buyout day is. For several years it has been the Sunday after opening day.

Very interesting picture. From ground level, I've always thought I'd prefer the old style to the fountains, but with the tower view, I understand what everyone is saying. I do like the old surround to the fountains, but prefer the trees. I also noted that in the '74 picture, there are sidewalks to the storefronts and then the area where people are walking (Disney Main Street Style) whereas today its all one surface.

Without speaking specifically to FUN, when looking at a stock or any investment, where it is relative to the past is just a data point. What is more important are the fundamentals behind a company and where the price is going. It's also important to understand the type of investor you are - short term trader or long term holder as that can have a big impact on whether an investment is right for you.

While I miss the Safari and Monorail, I have to admit it is one of the areas that I do understand the park replacing - I can't imagine that owning and maintaining the lands for the animals was economical. My only wish is that they could have kept some of the theme from the area as they changed and grew as it was very well themed and I think lacks significantly in that area now. JD - thanks for the ongoing thread. It is one that makes me check KIC daily (and forces me to use the computer versus mobile skin) Also thanks to Hendrick for the fades, they add to the thread very nicely - I love reviewing the pictures first, then checking the fade.

You reference this a lot - any chance you are ever going to share more details?

I miss my friends that I typically see at the park. Whether hanging out or riding rides, there is a group of people I know through KI and KIC. I haven't seen most in months as I was unable to visit the park in late Sept/Oct and have not been able to meet up outside the park. Looking forward to telling everyone "Happy New Year" in April!

Never stayed there, but it sounds today a lot like the old part of Breakers - convenient and adequate, but unlike Breakers, doesn't charge you for luxury that isn't there. Thanks for posting, I love this stuff!

JD - I've been waiting for days to get home and see these pics on something larger than the mobile skin on my phone, and they didn't disappoint now that the Dr's finally discharged me Thank you for the efforts in pulling this together - I look forward to the future installments (won't you please consider posting on weekends?) I see so many things about the park that I miss - the driving rides the most but things like the tunnel also, and have many fond memories of the park from a bygone era. I understand progress, but wish my kids had the chance to drive me on the 'Tiques like I did my Dad - it is something they love to do at any park with a similar ride. Although I have to admit they are also the ride on which I would most often get in trouble during my teenage park going years

Way back when I was in college, the Bank charged an additional fee if you went inside and talked to the teller - the intent was to get people to start banking with the ATM. Back then it seemed fees were used to drive behavior - now fees are used to make money I in my opinion.

A couple of interesting posts from earlier in this thread. With the latest data, it doesn't sound like he ever really put his own money at risk - although saying he'd invested that much of his own money in the park probably was good for PR as he asked the state to finance the project. Shaggy seems to have nailed it a long time ago.

For those that would like to understand if something is really happening with Son of Beast that hasn't been announced, I'd recommend using the Warren County Auditors site. For example, http://www.co.warren.oh.us/auditor/property_search/memos.asp?account_nbr=1202233 this link was the place where I first saw the words "Wave Pool" that turned out to be the Soak City update for 2012 - and also shows other updates that have been made in the recent past. And, http://www.co.warren.oh.us/recorder/search/parceldisplay.asp?parcelnum=1617200013&searchtype=Parcel&startdisplay=&datebeg=&enddisplay=&dateend= this link has a new item that appeared this week which provides notice of the commencement of the activities with a bunch of vendors for the work on Soak City Is it perfect - no, as I can't really point to a construction for Diamondback in the second link (the first link used to reference "Rivertown Coaster"), but it can be interesting at times.

Kinzel recives key to the city
KIfan1980 replied to PhantomTheater's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Isn't that the goal of any executive at any company? Man I really hope not. In my opinion, the goal of any executive at any company should be to along the lines of growing and developing the company - helping it meet the needs of the employees, stakeholders, customers, and the community in which it operates. While doing that might lead to personal gain as well, it should be the result, not the driver. -
Thanks for sharing - I visited KBF last year and loved it. They have a great collection of rides, theme, and the park just has a great atmosphere (so long as you don't need glasses based upon what I understand from Terp). Have to disagree on Silver Bullet/Raptor - to me SB is head and shoulders above Raptor, I especially love the fake roll.

I can only really comment on Howl-o-Fest this year as I've been unable to visit KI myself since P&G day (this will be the first time I didn't visit multiple times during the Haunt season for some amazing night rides and the first closing day I'll miss in years - I miss riding my coasters, but hope to be better by opening day 2012! ) My kids still enjoyed Howl-o-Fest, but commented that it wasn't as much fun as prior years because there was no pumpkin patch or candy stations. Because of this they only wanted to go to the park that one time this fall - as much as they've enjoyed riding coasters in their costumes in the past, this attitude surprised me a little but goes to show how a little thing can make a big difference.
