Please don't try to compare news coverage of car accidents to news coverage of safe roller coaster stoppages. The difference is that when a car accident occurs, obviously something happened that wasn't safe, whereas with a ride stop like this, all of the safety systems worked exactly as they were supposed to. Also, the media as of lately is over-sensationalizing stopped roller coasters and blowing them way out of proportion. With car accidents, the news generally covers them without sensationalism, and with the correct level of attention (e.g. a minor fender-bender without injuries will usually only get a brief mention with regard to the resulting impact on traffic flow). And finally, when a car accident that is worthy of a news story occurs, there are typically injuries, significant property damage, and so forth that has a significant impact, either temporary or permanent, on people's lives. This afternoon's incident (if you can even call it that) on Diamondback was nothing but a simple inconvenience compared to that. Reputable news sources should not be wasting time on reporting that some people were inconvenienced for half an hour, which is what today's Diamondback coverage amounts to.

OK then, assuming that the Gold Pass was purchased/renewed during the fall sale (price: $90.00), then the cost to upgrade would be $114. If he doesn't upgrade, he's looking at a three-day ticket for $87, lost discounts on the resort room (blindly estimated value: $30), lost food/merchandise discounts (estimated value: $10 to $15 depending on meal costs and whether t-shirts or other souvenirs are purchased), and so forth, and I'd go with the upgrade. (And I'm assuming here that parking is included with your resort room; IIRC, some Breakers Express deals do not include parking, so if you go that route without a Platinum Pass, you may need to add another $15 per day.)

1. The upgrade cost would be the difference between what you originally paid for the Gold Pass and $204.00, which is the current price of a Platinum Pass. Additionally, if you have the All-Season Dining Plan on your Gold Pass, you MIGHT need to also pay the difference between what you originally paid for the dining plan and $129.00, which is the current price of a Platinum dining plan. 2. Given that your Platinum Pass would include discounts at the on-site resorts, plus food and merchandise discounts in the park, I would assume it would be well worth it (which I say without looking up the price of three-day tickets).

Most likely, today saw both the crowds that were planning to be there today to begin with, plus the crowds that were planning to be there yesterday but postponed because of the weather. That type of thing tends to happen on the day after a rainy/stormy day, and that's why I always try to avoid the day after bad weather.

Indeed, that's more or less the experience I got when I visited last season: friendly employees and fun rides. However, the park's issues are with upper management and the "big picture", not so much with the little things like that.

From my understanding, there are two reasons: One, it makes the front heavier than the back so that in a case where the train barely reaches the top, the center of gravity will be further forward, making it more likely to fall forward as less of the train needs to be past the peak. Two, I believe they need to warm up the launch system gradually by slowly increasing the weight of the train. As I understand it, going directly from test trains with a single employee to full trains with 18 people could break the system. If I'm wrong here, I invite corrections from those who know otherwise.

Yes. Gravity pulls all trains downhill at the same rate, but heavier trains lose less speed when going uphill, because they have more momentum (defined as the product of the object's mass and velocity). Thus a full train is more likely to make it over a hill than an empty train, assuming both hit the bottom of the hill at the same speed.

The money I'd save by going to Lexington to get it would be mostly lost by the extra gas used for that side trip, and what little savings that would be left IMO isn't worth the added hour on the drive down there plus the need to refuel on the way back (I can drive directly to Louisville and back on a single tank, but not if I detour to Lexington on the way down.)

The issues are that 1) I don't know if I would have a chance to make more than one visit, and 2) I don't know if I could afford multiple visits, as I'm on a really, really tight budget this summer.
