COSI's Adventure to Close 2017
Kenban replied to bkroz's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I just wanted to say that I finished level 2 earlier today. It was definitely worth doing, although I am not a huge fan of the puzzles in one area, I just felt like there was not enough instruction. Having said that, if you have never been to Adventure before I cannot recommend enough to go and experience the first level if nothing else. It only takes an hour or two and is extremely well done. If you want to experience everything and complete the harder set of puzzles expect to spend two or three days. Take a pencil, flashlight, camera, and a notebook. Be willing to ask for assistance if you are stuck because some of the puzzles are difficult. This is a very unique experience which will soon disappear for good and this is your last chance. If anyone wants some assistance on level 2 just ask. I will try to help without giving too much away. -
Christmas Nights of Lights Coming to Coney Island
Kenban replied to CoastersRZ's topic in Coney Island Central
I visited the lights at the Mega Caverns last year. I agree that the display is good but if the only nights you can make it are Friday or Saturday I would skip it. The line of cars waiting is crazy. -
Depends on what you mean by another ride like Son of Beast? Another 200+ ft tall wood coaster? Possible and maybe even likely as long as it is done by RMC or using a style similar to RMC. But that means more steel both in the support structure and the track. But if you are specifically talking about another just massive traditional wood coaster, I do not believe it will ever be done again. It just makes no sense.

They come in two sizes. The original model is 55 feet tall, while this is the giant version which is 72 feet tall.

Hong Kong Disney expansion

Unless Disney can get Universal Orlando to agree to give up the Marvel rights it is not possible to build Avengers at WDW. -
Carowinds Vortex is settling?
Kenban replied to RollerNut's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Cedar Fair had 4 stand up coasters in the chain during 2014. As of right now they have one, the only one left is Vortex at Carowinds. They sold the TOGO, and converted two of the three B&M's. Even without other information it seems obvious to me a conversion is very likely. Interviews with executives and comments at enthusiast events have also indicated additional conversions are being planned. -
I have wondered if a new OTSR is the answer to headbanging on coasters. Something like the ones on standup coasters where the entire OTSR can move up and down not just pivot. If the entire restraint moved down onto the shoulders so that riders heads were above the restraint I would think it would be more comfortable for riders.

Carowinds Vortex is settling?
Kenban replied to RollerNut's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
All of this sounds like complete garbage. Every park has a sinking coaster, at Kings Island it is Vortex, and at Cedar Point it is Magnum. It is very unlikely any of them are sinking. -
The bigger problem with having to know how to ride a coaster is the fact that the only people who might know are the enthusiasts. The general public does not stand a chance. The majority of park visitors are the general public. Go to an enthusiast event, watch where people sit on a coaster. At Coasterstock just watch The Beast and you will quickly notice the majority of people are sitting in the front row, back row, or a non-wheel seat. But on smoother rides like Diamondback you will see people spread out and take every available seat just to get on the ride faster. A similar effect occurs on Vortex with people riding in the "good" seats and ignoring the rough seats. Maverick is one of the perfect examples of a coaster which went from crap to amazing just by replacing the restraints. I used to maybe ride it once a year but now I try to ride as often as possible.

Avatar Land at WDW now has a rough opening date
Kenban replied to BoddaH1994's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
The rumor which was reported on a number of Disney fan sites is that the automated boats were having trouble getting their movements precise enough. This was causing the boats to run into each other which was damaging the boats. The claim has been made the executives liked the show but demanded that they fix the boat problems before it opens. With no official word it is hard to know how accurate any of the rumors are. -
Did I ride it? Yes both with the loop and without. Did I like it? Not really, the best part of the original ride was the loop. Beyond that I kept trying the ride every once in a while and never found myself enjoying it. Would I ride it again? Even with no line I rarely rode it when it was open. Maybe once a season, but I doubt I would even do that. The ride was a complete disaster and the park is better off without it.

Cedar Point 2016 Talk
Kenban replied to Bansheeback's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Except if RMC had a project which would open in 2017 which could not be discussed the normal response is that, "We have nothing to annouce at this time". I have also heard "I cannot discuss possible future projects." To just flat out state that RMC has no 2017 projects is very telling to me. -
Disney's MagicBand vs. Universal's TapuTapu
Kenban replied to bkroz's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
The wait between fast passes at Disney is two hours or when the window for your fast pass opens, whichever comes first. You cannot just run around the park and collect a pile of passes. Typically late night shows for example World of Color which offer a fastpass are not tied to the rest of the system so getting a fastpass to the show does not prevent someone from getting passes for rides. The fastpass system with paper passes is still in place at all Disney parks except Shanghai and Orlando. Only Orlando moved to the Magic bands and reservation system. If you like the old system just go to California, Disneyland has stated they do not plan to switch largely because they have such a large percentage of locals visiting the park. If you like the new system with magic bands just go to Orlando. Personally I am fine either way. I still prefer Disneyland in general, the compact nature of the park, plus the two parks in California have almost as many rides as all four parks in Florida. -
Let me provide some background on the metal detectors at Universal. Of the three Universal parks in the United States only the two parks in Orlando has the metal detectors in front of the lines on any attraction. Universal Hollywood does not have any looping coasters and does not have the metal detectors on any individual attraction. Universal Orlando only has them on 3 rides, Rip Ride Rockit, Hulk, and Dragon Challenge. These rides are the only looping coasters at the parks. While Mummy does not have metal detectors, they do not allow loose items such as bags, so it is basically the same policy as Banshee. The no items including in pockets policy has been in place for more than a year in Orlando except the permanent metal detectors were only installed earlier this year. Last year the employees used wands similar to how security at Kings Island is done. One major but a number of minor safety incident started this. Back in 2011 a guest riding Dragon Challenge was struck in the face with an item which fell from the other train. His eye was damaged and had to be surgically removed. Sadly he only had one working eye before the incident so he was left completely blind. The park has had a number of other thankfully minor injuries on the ride from loose objects with stories of customers with cuts on their arms and legs after they ride the attraction due to objects from the other train. The park has since decided to never allow the coasters to duel again. The park has also had issues with items falling out of guests pockets on Rip Ride Rockit. The lift hill is vertical and with guests lying on their backs it becomes very easy for items to fall out of their pockets. The good news is that the lockers are free but there is not enough of them. I have heard stories about guests waiting 45 minutes for an empty locker in the middle of the summer.

It is difficult to say for certain. But I think people have focused too much on the gaps. It is hard to be certain but I doubt the gaps make a difference until the raft is already in trouble. Friction is likely enough to cause this accident and having a more solid belt will likely provide more friction. I would look at either issues with safety sensors or a lack of sensors. If a raft gets stuck right after the conveyor then the conveyor should automatically shut down.

The animals on the safari have enclosures and return there every night. They will be indoors, safe and dry during the storm. -
COSI's Adventure to Close 2017
Kenban replied to bkroz's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Just an FYI for anyone not familiar with reciprocity. Many museums belong to organizations through which members can get free or discounted admission to other museums. COSI belongs to both ASTC (free) and ACM (50% off). Members of the Cincinnati museum center which is currently mostly closed for renovations is also a member of ATSC and members for instance get free admission to COSI and they pay the member price for a ticket to Adventure. I keep planning on doing the second level of Adventure I guess I need to get it done. -
Cedar Point 2016 Talk
Kenban replied to Bansheeback's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Agreed. Topper track rides seem to be better received, and the park can potentially market it as a record breaking wooden coaster. Both forms of RMC track are assembled at the factory, so it wouldn't take any longer on site. In the past RMC has stated they are not willing to put topper track on a conversion. It is possible something has changed but I doubt it. -
EPCOT is getting a coaster
Kenban replied to Colonel_SoB_fan's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
The old Wonders of Life building is frequently rented to companies and for private events. It is unlikely it will be used for an attraction. A section of the Imagination pavilion was turned into a private DVC club earlier this year. I am not surprised the Universe of Energy attraction is just old and out of date. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the few Marvel properties they could get away with utilizing at Disney World. It just feels like something which should be at the studios. But then I keep hoping that Disney realizes just how terrible Dinosaur over at Animal Kingdom is and just turns it into Indiana Jones like at Disneyland. The track layout is almost identical they just need to rip out all the theming. -
Decoding Episode 2.5: BONUS ROUND! Second Announcement!
Kenban replied to jcgoble3's topic in Kings Island
I think I missed that one...and that could go so many ways. Something in the lyrics for Mustang Sally by Wilson Picket...or the lyrics to Ride Sally Ride by Lou Reed...or the first American woman in space... ...or something completely different. That was used with Diamondback. I am not convinced that a lot of the postings were actually hints. The one from Rocky for instance was done on snapchat and I am pretty certain we already figured out that account was handled by an intern with no knowledge of the attraction. -
The law in Ohio is that parks are required to follow the guidelines of the ride manufacturer. My understanding is that without approval from PTC the park is not allowed to turn the trains around. The other option is to get new trains that the park can get approval to run backwards.

The park wants us talking and speculating. We are doing exactly what the park wants. In a way this is free marketing.I remember commenting to Don that he must get annoyed by being asked almost the same question over and over again until an announcement. His response was that he thought it was fine, and he would care more if we stopped talking about what was going on. By not making the annoucement early in the season it increases the speculation and buzz. Look at how frequent the posts occurred before and after the announcement of Mystic Timbers. This is the same reason the park is not talking about the shed.

My personal guess is that this is nothing more than a marking. Either for power or a data cable, maybe even a pipe of some sort. I doubt we are looking at GCI or RMC working on The Racer. If they were why would there be only one stake? Ignoring how unlikely this is, we can pretty much rule out GCI. They have publicly stated they have four projects for next year and all of them have already been announced. Two of them are in China, plus Mystic Timbers, and InvadR. I really doubt Cedar Fair would have RMC modify this ride. But just to throw it out there, earlier this year RMC stated they have four projects for 2017. At this time to my knowledge none have been announced.
