Kings Island Announces The World's Longest Inverted Coaster for 2014!

Recommended Posts

People are very sensitive and want to complain. The majority will probably never even go to a amusement park. In order not to have ANY bad publicity the park will change it.

I hope the park stands their ground and keeps the name. This world is so politically correct, that it's getting annoying.

Very excited for Banshee and I cannot wait to ride it next year!

I was looking up other B&M inverted coasters and I found one that was released last year called OzIris at Parc Asterix in France. I watched the video below and it seems like a very smooth ride and the lift hill is as quiet as a whistle!

However, it doesn't feature the new restraints that Banshee has. I am somewhat worried about the restraints on Banshee because they look similar to Gatekeeper's restraints, and those would get very tight on your chest throughout the ride. So I'm hoping that I won't get that same feeling that I get on Gatekeeper on Banshee. Anyways, taking a look at OzIris, the most recently built B&M inverted, I have faith that Banshee is going to be a smooth and thrilling ride experience!

It seems the restraint issue is isolated to Gatekeeper. I'm sure there won't be an issue with Banshee.

I for one hope they recycle the music that was played throughout the line and the ride cycle of The Crypt. I absolutely loved that and it would fit perfectly. I'll always miss sonny because he broke my fear of coasters, but I'm stoked for Banshee!

The restraints were the only part of the announcement I did NOT like. Both Gatekeeper and Wild Eagle's restraints absolutely killed my shoulders. I am 6 foot 4 and by the end of the ride when it comes into the brake run it is very tight and it hurts to even attempt to move. They are not going to keep me from riding it but it might limit my rides in a day, hopefully not the ride experience itself.

The real test is to see if KI can compete with the relaunch of KK in May 2014, they will need this new sweet ride to compete for tourist dollars next year.

I truly do not believe that.

The theater four miles away will be a bigger competitor to Kings Island than Kentucky Kingdom will be. And that will be true for the foreseeable future.

I was thinking more in terms of Kentucky tourists. KI hasn't had any competition for the last 4 years and thats why its CF biggest money making park

I don't see the difference with having a ride named The Demon and one being named Banshee!

Though I don't mind either, the Banshee legend is that anyone who sees or hears one will soon die / have a death in the family. That's a little different than a general "demon," I think. Let's just pray no one with a pre-existing condition rides this and returns to the station unresponsive... Now THAT will be a unique situation to explain to the press, and you can see the possibilities for backlash immediately.

The feeling I get was that when the Banshee dilemma occurred in the 90's, it was at least also partially because a Banshee is always a female, and her ear-piercing screech is deadly. A bit of a sexist undertone in there... Cedar Fair appears to pre-empt that negative connotation this time by proudly saying on every page of Banshee's site that it's the first Cedar Fair attraction based on a female, omitting the backstory that makes that prestigious record a bit less triumphant for the fairer sex.

Did you try holding onto the vest itself so that it would stay gently rested on your shoulders? I know that helped me at Gatekeeper's media day, but I am far from 6 foot 4 so it could be very different for you :)

It's not superstition... It's not like any great number of people would say "Oh, a Banshee signals death, so I won't ride that because I don't want to die."

Rather, it's something to consider in marketing the ride - the headlines write themselves for if someone with a preexisting condition runs straight to the new ride first thing in the morning on their first day at the park and returns to the station unresponsive and - God forbid - passes away as a result. A legend that directly connects with the death of someone who sees a Banshee is different than say, "Demon" or "Possessed" or "Poltergeist." Granted, not NOW necessary, but expect a backlash if someone ever is seriously hurt or killed in relation to this ride, directly or otherwise.

Again, I'm not saying I'd rally to change the name. I'm just pointing out what could happen, and perhaps part of the reason why Banshee never came to be last time. That said, the Internet has now spread news of the ride internationally. It wouldn't be as easy to bury and replace as it was a decade ago where the only mention of Banshee was a few promotional shirts. EDIT: It'd be a hell of a marketing ploy, though! If this were Alton Towers, maybe...
