Amusement Park Time Machine

Recommended Posts

If you could go back in time to any amusement parks and pick 5 former rides or attractions what would you pick? Please include both ride and park

1. Nickelodeon Studios (Universal Studios Orlando)

2. King Cobra ( Kings Island) (I was too little to ride it, but it looked intense!)

3. Sounds Dangerous! Starring Drew Carrey (Epcot, DisneyWorld)

4. Phantom Theater (Kings Island)

5. Scooby Doo and the Spooky Swamp ( Six Flags, St. Louis) (My family was planning a there last year but we ended up going to The Mall of America, if I would of known it was the last year of operation for the ride, then I would of convinced my parents to go there instead.)

I'm not a big enthusiast of rides outside of the Cincinnati area and have honestly never ridden a rollercoaster outside of this area so my list is kinda skewed to this area...

1. Shooting Star at Coney Island

2. The Bat (the original) at Kings Island

3. Screamin' Demon at Kings Island

4. Screachin' Eagle at Americana

5. Skyride at Kings Island

In no particular order:

1. Disaster Transport (Cedar Point)

2. Tomb Raider: The Ride (Kings Island)

3. King Cobra (Kings Island)

4. Son of Beast- with loop (Kings Island)

5. Catapult (Six Flags New England)- this thing looked awesome. Yes, I know I could go across the pond and ride Slammer at Thorpe Park, but still...

1. Son of Beast with loop (Kings Island)

- Never got around to riding it. I was way to little to ride it in the first couple of years. When I went back to Kings Island after not going in a couple years... it was always closed :P

2. King Cobra (Kings Island)

- It looked pretty awesome but was way too little to ride it.

3. Kenton's Cove Keelboat Canal (Kings Island)

- Wasn't old enough/tall enough to ride it.

4. Enchanted Voyage (Kings Island)

- Wasn't close to being born when it opened.

5. Phantom Theater (Kings Island)

- I believe I rode it when I was little but I hardly even remember it. Would love to go back and re-ride it and expirence.

1. LeMarcus Thompson's Scenic Railway in Atlantic City, NJ (Thompson developed the first patented roller coaster)

2. Harry Traver's Crystal Beach Cyclone, Crystal Beach- I would bring my own padding and ways to keep my head stable though. Probably some pain killers as well.

3. Shooting Star, Coney Island- Cincinnati

4. Drachen Fire, Busch Gardens Williamsburg (and while I was there, Big Bad Wolf)

5. The Bat- Kings Island (circa 1981)

I rev up my machine, a time machine.

I called it the Big Boom 1, or BB1 for short.

Reaching into my pocket I picked up a mangled sheet of paper, torn at the sides, smudged by oil.

I turned a brass nob, while putting the machine into second gear.

VOOOM-VOOOM-VOOOM

It was dusk

I looked at my dash board to notice that it was 8 o clock, Magic Kingdom.

I dashed for the Fantasy Land, to get aboard the chair lift.

I went over the park in joy and happiness.

I then disembarked to only run to my machine as we then embarked to a new destination.

VOOOM-VOOOM-VOOOM.

It was the 1950's, Coney Island.

I came out, looking like a 50's fellow would, and made my way hastily to my ride.

I came up to the Shoot-The-Chutes, and boarded for the most fantastic of rides.

I went up and up, then back down into the water, a skip and a splash into the lake.

The machine was beeping now, 3 more stops until I cannot do anymore.

VOOOM-VOOOM-VOOOM.

I came out onto a parking lot, I remember this.

It was old, yet, so homily, I looked out, it was Boomerang Bay.

I laughed and I skipped for joy, running into the Australian gates yet again to experience my home.

I started to take photographs, and listen to the Crocodile Dundee voice, and the theming galore.

The theme, the music, everything. I stayed for hours, the whole day, and soon after, the week.

It was paradise, and I wanted to stay; but the machine had a set amount of time that it could stay, and I had to go.

VOOOM-VOOOM-VOOOM

I stepped out onto a familiar scene, it was so familiar that I almost took a step back.

It was Halloween Haunt, and I was next to Trail of Terror.

The terror began almost immediately.

The old ghosts, the old kooks, it was all like it happened before; which it has.

I was in the same group with my old self, all ready for the terror, I almost didn't even recognize myself.

I walked back pleased, but with only one last stop.

VOOOM-VOOOM-VOOOM.

My machine was halfway down, and it was on its' crutches.

I walked out to be at the Institute Of Future Technology, exactly where I wanted!

Meandering around the tech found here, i made it back to finally ride in a Delorean Time Machine.

After my trip, I went back to my time machine; only to find a Delorean Time Machine.

A note was inside the car "This has unlimited time travels, so use it well. -Doc"

After that I went on even more adventures, but mostly to Boomerang Bay.

I was actually able to visit Everland but sadly, Eagle's Fortress was SBNO at the time. I was so upset.

1. Steel Phantom- Kennywood

2. Orient Express- Worlds of Fun

3. Big Bad Wolf- Busch Gardens Williamsburg

4. Drachen Fire- Busch Gardens Williamsburg

5. Shockwave- Six Flags Great America (I did ride this one, but I want it back)

As I look at these lists, two thoughts emerge:

A ) So many wise historical choices. It warms this old National Amusement Park Historical Association member's heart.

B ) How old I am and fortunate I am to have ridden so many of these great rides. Of course, many of you will be riding things yet unknown when I have moved on to the next great adventure after this one.

My list:

1) The Original Bat at Kings Island

2) Raging Wolf Bobs at Geauga Lake

3) X-Flight at Geauga Lake (to experience 3 train operations and the original mechanism that would put the train into the "laying position")

4) King Kobra at Kings Island

5) Hercules at Dorney Park

  1. Haunted House - Coney Island, Cincinnati
  2. Bat Cave - Coney Island, Cincinnati
  3. Lost River - Coney Island, Cincinnati
  4. Phantom Theater - Kings Island
  5. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter - Magic Kingdom

1. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (MK WDW. Curse you Pooh!)

2. ExtraTerrorestrial )MK WDW-but only in its original, far more intense incarnation, before Eisner ordered it toned down bc the kiddos were leaving the ride in tears)

3. Funtastic World of HB (Universal Orlando; briefly KI; zippy, trippy fun!)

4. Jaws (Universal Orlando-in its halcyon days before it fell into disrepair)

5. Snow White's Scary Adventures (MK WDW-i'm excited to ride the new mine train in a couple months, but this was a rare Fantasyland ride which clearly warned young ones that it was intense..and it was! the evil Queen popping up in unexpected places!)

Honorable Mention- Body Wars (Epcot). One of the first great motion simulator rides. Re-imagine the Wonders of Life! (even if its to something like Big Hero 6. Let's face it-Epcot has slowly given up the ghost of Walt's original intent over the years, so why not just continue the trend? A good D or E ticket ride in there would be great!)

Honorable Mention 2-Horizons (Epcot) mmmmmm oranges!

When my family and I went to DisneyWorld, when we went and rode Stiches Great Escape, kids were crying on that too, its a ride based ona cartoon, but I can see why kids were scared on it when we rode. I watched videos of ExtraTerrorestrial and I can really understand why kids cried on the ride, I would love to go back in time to ride it, great technology!

It was fantastic! The alien was very scary and when all the 4D effects were firing properly it was one heck of a fun ride. I really believe that during the Eisner era, he tried hard to bring adult-type D and E ticket attractions to the parks in order to draw more adults.
