Six Flags Great Adventure’s Record-Breaking BAKUNAWA Will Be Unlike Any Roller Coaster You’ve Ever Ridden

Featured Replies

A 382-foot-tall coaster. Speeds of 100 mph. Six world records. The world’s first free-spinning floorless coaster trains. Six Flags Great Adventure’s new BAKUNAWA is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated roller coasters of 2027. Here’s why thrill seekers will want to add it to their bucket list.

It's not super often that rides make me feel genuinely afraid--the only two that have done so as an adult are X2 at SFMM and Texas SkyScreamer at SFoT. I genuinely think Bakunawa might join the group. The train is at the top of the tower for a hwhile, so there's potential to be stuck looking down with naught but air between you and the ground and not a ton visually to remind you that you're safe. I'm excited to ride!

This is the first coaster in a long time that I’ve thought has really pushed the boundaries of being something completely unique. The ride sounds absolutely amazing, but with anything cutting edge I have two pessimistic predictions: it will open significantly later than scheduled; and will suffer huge amounts of downtime (at least in its first few years). But, I think those who are able to get a ride will think its incredible.

I’m sure its been mentioned and I’ve just missed it, but who is the manufacturer?

The advantage this one has to possibly opening on time is look how much has already been built compared to other coasters in the past announced around the same time that maybe only had some earthwork done.

It is a Mack product.

I had to go hunting for it. Considering it's a MACK I don't think it will be too bad on getting the bugs out.

It’s a beautiful innovative monstrosity. I wanna ride it. It feels like something you would build in Planet Coaster, not something that exists in real life.

With it's expected capacity of 900pph, the capacity sounds terrible for a massive park like Great Adventure.

On one hand, I want to be excited about this coaster since it really is a pretty unhinged concept. But honestly it just feels like another gimmick-y shuttle coaster. It's a good looking gimmick-y shuttle coaster and one I would ride when given the chance.

I guess I am just in a state of fatigue over parks either 1) building family coasters or 2) building something gimick-y.

I'm ready to see a park install a good ol' decently long, super thrilling traditional looping coaster (lift hill or launch, don't care ) or a high intensity-airtime filled wooden coaster. And I'm good with being in this camp by myself. I appreciate innovation and parks/manufacturers trying different things, but I feel like we are in that strange era of the coaster timeline where everyone is either doing family coasters or these mind-bending over-the-top crazy designs. I hope someone evens the playing field soon and installs something awesome but feels more like a roller coaster in the semi-traditional sense.
