Paramount vs. Cedar Fair

Based on your experiences over the past few weekends of operation, are you confident in Cedar Fair's ability to run Kings Island? Will it be restored to the old glory of the 70s and 80s? Will we see a thrill ride boom? Will Cedar Fair run the parks as well, or even better than Paramount Parks did?

Its still rather early to tell one way or the other who is better for Kings Island. Especially since the full season has yet to get underway. I think that we will have a better indication of how Cedar Fair runs things once the full summer season starts up and the park gets Firehawk flying.

I like the fact that Cedar Fair has come in and put a major new coaster in the park in the first full season of their control. I also think that it bodes well for us that Dick Kinzel seems to think that we have a wonderful and beautiful park. Hopefully, that means good things to come this season, and in future seasons.

It's too soon to really know how well they will do. But if you saw the interview with Dick Kinzel, he stated it usually takes 3-5 years for CF to make the changes to the parks it buys. Don't judge CF by this one year. Be patient and let's see what happens.

I'm talking more like Paramount over the past decade vs. your current impression of Cedar Fair's influence.

I like most of the changes and think that things will ultimately be better. The only things that bother me are the mainstream music they started playing on International Street and perhaps Cedar Fair's lack of enthusiasm for dark rides. But I think overall they will do a better job that Paramount!

Well, technically, many may argue that Paramount had a lack of enthusiasm towards dark rides as well. I think others will agree that Phantom Theater was a much better dark ride than what Scooby is. But, on the flipside, Scooby draws in long lines which is something that PT didn`t do its last couple of seasons. (And Paramount did add Scooby rides to many of its parks.

I'm very impressed with how CF runs parks. From the first time I walked into CP I knew something was different. It was extremely clean, including the restrooms. The employees were mostly very friendly and happy and the whole place just seemed to go out of its way to make your visit more fun. Now I'm seeing these same things at KI and I must say, I'm very happy about it. :)

Cedar Fair has already done a better job than Paramount. The park is cleaner, the employees are friendlier, and they have already built a new ride that will have many guests line up.....IN THERE FIRST SEASON! I think the only thing Paramount added there first season was Top Gun, which if I might add is losing my enthusiasm every time I visit the park. I think a ride should be torn down when riders say it's something to do rather than this is a pretty good ride. Anyone agree?

Ummm.....no.

Just because it doesn't go over 100 feet or last longer than two minutes doesn't label it as a "mild roller coaster."

And, if I may add, you forgot Face/Off, Drop Zone, Delirium, Flight of Fear, Tomb Raider, Coolangata Racer, and Tasmanian Typhoon as rides that have hordes of people clamoring to their entrances, even long AFTER their first season.

I would hate to lose Top Gun, yes it's a short ride and you have a mile hike to get back there. I have yet to get a walk on Top Gun ride this year. The line has been anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes every time I've been to the park this year.

I could really care less about Top Gun myself. I think the space could be used for a much more appealing ride. The whole area back there looks like a junk pile including the ride itself. Sorry but its just my opinion.

Its deteriorated pretty badly. They need to clean up the queue, clean up the station, and totally repaint everything. Other than painting over the red in about 1999, nothing on Top Gun has been touched since it opened.

If you could care less, then that means you DO care.

Otherwise, you would have said you couldN'T care less.

Your Freudian slip is showing! :)

And how anyone could say Top Gun looks like a junk pile in a park that sports Italian Job, I can't possibly imagine...

So are you saying in would be easier to TAER ;) TG down, and replace it, than to clear some of the land that KI already owns and build a new ride?

And what type of appealing ride could only go where TG is currently located?

I am still trying to figure out why some believe addition by subtraction is a good thing.

*Excuse me while I beat my head against the wall*

I for one, love Top Gun, it is one of my favorite rides in the park. Also, by the fact that it has had half hour waits so early in the season is a plus because, as we all know the lines will just get longer during peak operating season. The one thing I deffinately think Top Gun needs is some sprucing up, it is showing quite a bit of age!

Also, you will be hard pressed to find much that will go in the area where Top Gun is. You can obviously rule out any form of flat ride, unless you are gonna offer up several thousand dollars to bring in some clean fill! Any other coaster to go back there, any longer than Top Gun would need to be meticulously plotted if it is to follow the terrain at all, the area is just way too slopy.

Like Brown Tiggrr said, Addition by subtraction isn't always the best. The bottom line is that if Top Gun operates with full trains (or nearly full) until it closes regardless of wait times, than it has just as much capacity as a new ride would, perhaps more because of its lack of downtime. Although Im sure TG has some downtime *I* have never witnessed it, and it moves many, many more people than IJ and quite possibly Firehawk could ever hope too! If a ride is reaching near its peak ridership and isnt a boon to the operating budget why remove it, unless strapped for space? And, keep in mind it does cost to tear rides down, they don't magically disappear!

I hope that TG stays for years to come, but if it must go, than it must. I just hope it doesnt!

Well, like others have said before my post, it is too early in the season to determine whether Cedar Fair is controlling it better than Paramount did. I personally think Cedar Fair has done good so far. Especially by ading a new ride during their first season of ownership. I'm sure and I know that everyone will love the Firehawk!

"I simply must agree" Top Gun is in my view, going extinct. Not the ride itself, just the type of coaster. I love this ride. I ride it at least once every single time that I visit the park. It just would not be the same trip to Kings Island without it. And it does not look like junk. One view that I personally enjoy is how it corners close to the Son of Beast. If nothing else, it proves just how big the S.O.B. really is. And I have a lot of good memories of riding Top Gun. On the other hand, if someone wants to talk about a roller coaster successfully looking like a junk pile......

.....Then the award goes to......ITALIAN JOB: STUNT TRACK. Congratulations! You look like a junk pile! However, the evil helicopter quote is awesome!

As for Cedar Fair, they are doing a much better job in their 1st season than Paramount ever did. The park is cleaner, the associates are friendlier, and the atmosphere just seems more fresh and original.

Here is the additions made by each, with some coasters / rides being removed. I did not include Soak City as apart of the comparison.

Paramount 1992-2006:

Delirium 2003

Drop Tower 1999

Invertigo 1999

The Bat 1993

Xtreme Skyflyer 1995

Flight of Fear 1996

Flying ace aerial Chase 2001

Kite Eating Tree 2006

Linus Launcher 2006

Sally’s sea plane 1998

Surf dog 2006

Woodstock Whitley birds 1998

Back lot stunt coaster 2005

Son of Beast 2000 (removed)

Tomb raider 2002 (Removed)

Scooby doo and the haunted castle 2003 (removed)

Cedar Fair 2006 - Present.

Banshee 2014

Cargo loco 2023

Sol spin 2023

Orion 2020

Kings mills antique autos 2019

Wind seeker 2011

Boo blasters on boo hill 2010

Snoopy’s space buggies 2015

Woodstock gliders 2015

Diamondback 2009

Mystic Timbers 2017

Firehawk 2008 (removed)

It’s clear that during the 14 years of Paramount Kings Island saw its most additions with 6 coasters and 10 rides although 1 coaster and 2 rides have been removed, this would also mean Paramount invested more money in Kings Island as well, if adjusted to todays prices. The most expensive coaster built by Paramount with adjusted inflation was Son of Beast which would’ve cost a whopping $36,285,000 to build in 2023.

Cedar Fair who has operated KI for 17 years has made 12 additions, 5 of them being coasters and 7 being rides. The only ride / coaster removed was Firehawk. The most expensive coaster built by Cedar Fair with adjusted inflation would be Orion which would’ve cost $35,400,00 to be built in 2023.

Firehawk? While Ik it was technically built at Geauga Lake in 2001, it was CF who relocated it and opened it at KI in 07.
