WesReviews Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Any truth to the rumor that King Cobra is coming back (in one form or another) sometime in the next couple of years? I heard this not too long ago and wondered if any of you had heard the same, and if so, what? I miss this ride, and hope it does come out of retirement (with a few modern improvements, of course). Your thoughts?

There has not been a new stand-up built in almost 10 years for a reason- not a whole lot of people like them. Gordon Bombay Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 The ride was dismantled and for sale as scrap metal afterwards. It was carted off some time at the end of the 2006 season.
WooferBearATL Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 What is this accusing different coaster type and styles "gimmicks.' The stand up coaster seems to be a "gimmick" that exists in a few remaining parks. I always seem to see healthy lines at those remaining coasters.
The Interpreter Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 ...largely because loading is a very slow process on all but the B and M's...and even those take a bit...Georgia Scorcher at Six Flags Over Georgia always seems to have one of the shorter lines in the park, even though it is the first ride on the left side as you enter the park...
jzarley Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I actually prefer the old Togo stand-ups to the newer B&Ms... My only complaint about King Cobra was the short ride duration, but I enjoyed riding it up until the end. (I like the front seat ride experience in the Togo...you really feel like you're standing on the edge of the train.) I don't usually even ride the B&Ms stand-ups anymore unless I'm at a park where I haven't ridden their version yet. On my last two day trip to CP I didn't even ride Mantis at all...the 2.5 minute ride just isn't worth the 2.5 hour headache that results from it.
Touchdown Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Mantis should be renamed man crusher The only standup I really like (although I havent ridden RR) is the Scorcher, thats a great ride. However like any standup I have been on, the layout would have made a much better sitdown ride.

Of the stand-up, I have rode(list at end) Scorcher is my favorite. I believe it's layout would great in any form including inverted and floorless. Vortex at Carowinds is my least favorite. To be the third or fourth one built by B&M, you think that the ride would be smooth considering how small it is. Shockwave is my second, but it is a headache also. Mantis is unbearable, but I would rather wait for it than Vortex. -Vortex(Carowinds) -Mantis -Shockwave -Scorcher

I know stand ups are a fad, and that they are probably not going to be any more new ones. But hey, if you like them, cool! Oh and Chang sometime during the summer. Oh, I think The Beast sucks. Don't you all know it's a wooden mine train?
Beast1979 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I have never been on a stand-up coaster before, and I hope for that to change during "CoasterMania" this year. The King Cobra, from what I've heared, was a nightmare to maintain. In 2001 it was listed for sale, but no one bought it. The peices and trains are now housed somewhere in the feilds outside the FoF Dome, for further location details check Virtual Earth, and go to Birds Eye. CoasterImage has some photo's of the track out in the field, it's rusted and crumbling, in no condition to run. King Cobra is history.

markr Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Mantis rocks. Its still a pretty popular ride at the point. I am sure people wouldn't stand in line for it if they didn't like the ride. I would like to see a B and M stand up hyper coaster.

No one was doubting maintenance troubles, we were questioning his logic on the loop being the reason it was removed. As it has been noted quite a few times through multiple topics on this board, the steel of which the Togo stand up at KI was made with was of a different grade than its cousins at other former paramount parks. It became quite costly and time consuming to maintain this steel and such the ride was scrapped in favor of what hopefully be a more reliable attraction.

You make a great point Interpreter. Just because TOGO had the unfortunate reputation of having rough rides, doesn't mean we should Incorporate that all their rides are a mechanical mess. King Cobra has had mainly positive reviews as well as its clones at Kings Dominion and Canada's Wonderland. Gordon, I was speaking of the loop. I guess I should have been more thorough, sorry.

Since Kentucky Kingdom sucks so much, maybe have Cedar Fair purchase Chang from them, paint it Green and Yellow, and call it "King Cobra 2". Won't ever happen but I can always dream. I did love Chang the few times i went to KK, but Six Flags bought Kentucky Kingdom, got rid of the Vampire, and prevented any further expansion of the park. Sadly now you go there, ride chang, and thats about all there is to do.

Legend Rider Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Are you saying Six Flags constructed Thunder Run and Chang? Because that isn't true They were part of the temptation to buy the park. Chang was bought last minute to entice the buyers that it was a decent park. I say Chang should be preserved with Greezed Lightnin' and because Kentucky Kingdom's days may be numbered. Sure we need to Keep Twisted Twins, and Thunder Run and that "Hang'n'Bang" but those aren't nearly as popular. ::waits for riots to end:: Greezed Lightnin' is a landmark, a treasure from both Marriott Parks. Chang, was built to be the longest and Tallest Stand-Up Roller Coaster, and well, it's number 2 to Riddler's Revenge. so thats still exciting. Twisted Twins... umm, rough much? Thunder Run... nice ride, but again, these are the classic "Hurler" Design... its been done. Roadrunner, Rollerskater? multiple production rides. That about covers it. If King's Island gets Chang... I will move to Cincinnati, and at least attempt to be employed there. Okay, I'm kidding, I live in Western/Southern Kentucky and am tired of the cold here. ...but Chang is still amazing.
