Several things: A. Screamscape did NOT summarize here. Where's the giga discussion? The green INTAMIN track? The intelligent analysis? The Banshee insistence? B. Cedar Point a balanced park? No. It very much caters to the thrill seeker. That is one of many reasons Gatekeeper is such a brilliant addition for 2013. No, I won't be explaining that. I will note it had some of the shortest lines in the park last night, admittedly a small sample size. C. Bigger, BADDER. faster? Gatekeeper? That ride explains a lot. Earlier, much earlier, my philosophy of new Cedar Fair management was alluded to in a Italian Job: Stunt Coaster thread. Some, nay--most, took that too literally. Gatekeeper explains all. Look for a Gatekeeper type move at Kings Island. Mr. Ouimet has explained several times, in great detail, where Cedar Fair is headed. And it is not bigger, badder, faster. Look for a brilliant move at Kings Island. This post is not a diversion. (Hi, Mr. J!)10 points

I was thinking of starting a tally of how many time people repeat the same information in this thread...then I realized I can't count that high.8 points

By your logic, that means Planet Snoopy shouldn't exist. Amusement parks need to cater to ALL demographics. As overrated as Cedar Point is, it has pretty much everything under one roof, even having as many as THREE areas for the little kids. As for the thrill seekers' business plan being the only plan worth doing, need people be, once again, reminded of Worlds of Adventure?8 points

How about whatever KI gets is what KI gets. It's what they've determined they need not what anyone here on KIC thinks the park needs.6 points

I had the day off from Busch today, so I decided to take a trip to KD. I woke up around two and left around three after showering and some laundry. I arrived at 4 and the park closed at 6. In that short time I got in a front and back ride on I305, one ride on Volcano in the very back, one ride on Avalanche, two rides on Wild Eagles, two rides on Rebel Yell, one ride on Grizzly and one ride on Dominator to finish off the day. It was my first trip ever to the park, and I was impressed. It is beautiful. Not in the Busch Gardens kind of way, but the amount of trees is awesome. I305 was insane. I grey out on most rides, (No clue why) but I305 made me almost pass out. I loved it. Top 5 coaster for sure. Volcano was very cool. The barrel rolls are unique and very fun. Not sure why not a lot of people built these coasters. Rebel Yell I thought was better than KI's Racers. The first drop nearly threw me out of my seat. Grizzly was average. Dominator was pretty boring and also rough. I took a lot of pictures, but when I returned home and put the memory card in my laptop only 6 or so pictures would appear. Makes me mad. Anyways, thanks for reading.5 points

^Because rides like The Beast, Maverick, and Kumba aren't consistently regarded as some of the best roller coasters in the world.5 points

I saw it. A couple tricks are repeated and incorporated well into the new show, however it is for the most part different. Check it out!5 points

I'm hoping that as part of the expansion/revamp of Action Zone, that more family friendly flats/rides are part of the long term plan. The current construction certainly seems like some sort of major coaster installation, and I completely get putting in the major attraction first, but that area, and the park as well, could certainly use a handful of smaller, gentler flats (tea cups or spinning barrels seems like an obvious ommision from the park) as well as another coaster designed for the 40-48" and up crowd, something along the lines of flying Ace Arial Chase (but hopefully with better capacity). Planet Snoopy is about as packed as it can get. There is some room for a smaller ride back by the stage area, but otherwise they're going to have to take something out if they decide to add a "big" kid ride in that area. Honestly, its a very nice collection of rides for all age levels, flying ace arial chase, woodstock express, surf dog, race for your life charlie brown (which probably isn't technically in Planet Snoopy, but close enough) all pack a decent punch for the under 48" crowd. Snoopy junction, the multiple car rides, swings, planes and helicopter rides, great pumpkin coaster, etc.. all offer a thrilling experience for the under 40" crowd. Then they've got a good collection of rides that aren't really huge thrill rides, but are not aimed at the typical 2-3 year old in boo blasters, the smaller bumper cars, linus' launcher, tree kite, etc.. If there is one thing I'd take out, or at least modify, its the splash pad type attraction. I'm not sure how it worked when it was the slime zone, but I can't help but think just how poorly that layout is designed. Its an attraction aimed at kids in the 3-6 year old range, you enter on one side of the ride, then exit on the complete opposite side, which means parents either have to race around to the other side to collect their kids, or trust that their kids will come back around to the entrance. Just a dumb layout.5 points

Young'uns do get something new. They eventually are tall enough to ride the bigger rides which are new to them. New little kids replace the ones that are tall enough for bigger rides, so everything in Planet Snoopy is new to them. It's a cycle.5 points

There will always be some that believe SoB was a great coaster. Consider this: coaster polls are pretty much crap. Certain fanboys of parks or manufacturers will push their favorite to the top without experiencing other coasters. Enthusiasts will never agree which ride is the best. But when it comes to the worst? The majority if the same enthusiasts have put SoB near the bottom of every poll. When most enthusiasts agree, it's rather scary.4 points

A fast "out of control" ride expirience is what led to Son of Beast being where it is today.... If Voyage, Raven, and ThunderHead were that way then they would also be in the same situation.....4 points

I think that's a new record for Screamscape. 4 days and a complete reversal of their "source confirmation." I give it 4 more updates and the original 5/30 Wing confirmation will *POOF* dissapear. ;-)3 points

Here are my construction pics from today (I also took several other pics - those are in my main KI 2013 set on Flickr): For those who don't have flash: KI Construction 6/5 Interesting to note that our beloved triangular footer now has grass growing on it. Perhaps it was not meant to be part of a ride but rather part of some nice landscaping?3 points

Whatever coaster we get, I just hope it doesn't have a name that the coaster enthusiasts can tack an 'ie' onto it like 'Millie' or 'Timmie' or 'Maggie'. I'd blow my brains out haha3 points

Here's one for guests outside the park say the "darnest" things... I went to Office Depot yesterday to get a tally counter for Coasting for Kids. The guy that showed me where they were located asked if I was taking attendance. I told him that I was using it to keep track of my number of rides and explained Coasting for Kids. He asked if we have to get off after every lap and get back in line, I told him no, we stay on the train. I went on to say that I got 96 laps on Racer last year, and those that stayed on the whole time had about 113. He said "I don't see what's so impressive about that. The real challenge would be to see how many times you can ride with getting back in line each time." When he said that, I'm thinking "Excuse me? 96 laps, the equivalent of 62 miles (or 113 laps / 73 miles) isn't impressive?!?!?" But in the interest of being polite, I bit my tongue. He then went on to ask "How much do you know about the coasters there?" I replied, "Quite a bit." He said "The only rides I can ride there any more are Racer and Beast. I have steel rods in my back, and all the other rides have magnetic brakes, so they pull on my rods and I don't feel good afterwards. But that's why there are signs about medical conditions, but I ignored them. I rode Drop Tower once, and I wasn't right for a week and a half after. I can only ride the rides that still have friction brakes: Racer and Beast." My mind starts going at it again, thinking "Ugh.... Racer and Beast have had magnetic brakes for years! How can I escape quickly to the register?" I just politely said "Oh, yeah," and headed towards the register.2 points

Just watched the 3:30 show. Very entertaining. A certain large dad represented KIC for the knife stunt. My manhood is still intact. I also met Ohiocolts after the show who was also representing KIC. It was great to put a face with the member.2 points

Cousin- "Someone died on Flight Deck. The car got stuck upside down and someone slipped out" Me- "No that was Flight Commander. That was a completely different ride that hasn't been there for 20 years" Cousin- "That's what it used to be called. They renamed it after that kid died. It's the bluish grey one that swings all over the place" I just let him think he was right so he would repeat that story to someone else and sound like an idiot again.2 points

Question, which park actually has every single type of coaster out there that fills up the coaster catalog? I don't understand the "in" thing because there were only 3 B&M hyper coasters that have opened between 2008-2010. One respectively for each year in the United States. Between the 2008 and now, I've seen more relocations of coasters and "new" types of coasters than constantly adding the same type of coaster throughout numerous parks. The new "in" thing is Wing Coasters because there were two that opened last year and one this year. So I guess that cancels out the inversions are no longer fun thought. In 2012, there was not a single Wooden Coaster that opened, so that wasn't the "in" thing, but this year, 3 have opened. Is that the new "in" thing? But to the comment of Hypers are no longer enough, how many parks can add a hyper? Should parks that already have a hyper add another? I seem to look at Canada's Wonderland that has a B&M Hyper and a B&M Giga and both attractions are doing just fine. I've got a few friends that visit that park frequently and both seem to have the same wait times generally. We've seen that the 300 foot mark hasn't curbed people for looking for more speed, height and airtime. Look at Top Thrill Dragster and Kingda Ka. They both have long lines generally. 400 ft plus. So I guess the question you're really asking is when is it enough. Well we won't know until we reach that point. Those who visit amusement parks tastes change constantly with the type/age/area of people. What was once thrilling in the 80s is no longer thrilling in 2013 generally. There are some rides that fit the category for some, but not for others. I guess I'm just frustrated with your post because you are speaking of the thoughts of all the coaster enthusiasts and "everyone." Me, do I want a Giga? Yes. Why? Because I think they are fun (I've only been on Intamin's), they give airtime and I love over-banked turns. Would I be happy if KI got an Inverted Coaster in 2014? Yes. Why? Because Inverts are fun. Would I be happy if KI got a coaster in 2014? Yes. Why? Because the park could benefit from any new coaster. Just because you've heard a certain number of enthusiasts or whatever that have said they want to get their "high" doesn't mean that everyone feels the same way. When talking about Coaster Enthusiasts remember you're talking about a lot of people on here and not everyone here feels the same way that you think all coaster enthusiasts feel.2 points

^ I'm not sure CP will ever beat Knott's in attendance (due to both their operating calendar and HUGE metro market they pull from...) I think your points might have some real validity if Kinzel was still in charge, but my gut-level is that Ouimet doesn't consider CP nearly the same "sacred cow" as the previous management...I think the strategy of the current management team is to maximize attendance/revenue at all/any parks--not to purposely position others in order to elevate CP (which may--or my not--have the intended impact anyway...) I do agree that putting in a duplicate coaster (i.e., Gatekeeper) at both parks would probably have a net/net impact on attendance between CP & KI in the opening season, since the thought process of the GP would probably be "it's just the same ride." I think the real business goal is to grow the attendance revenue of BOTH parks by encouraging visits to both (as is illustrated in another topic currently trending on this site...the addition of a combo KI/CP ticket on sale at Kroger...)2 points

So, I have absolutely no idea what the new ride will be...nor do I possess the mechanical expertise to compare the layout and types of footers and make educated guesses about what is being constructed (but, I'm really impressed by those that have that ability!). However, as a KI (and parks in general) fan, I can say what I'd like most to see built: 1) A B&M invert (I'm still bitter that our Top Gun ended up being an Arrow suspended instead of the B&M invert that the other Paramount Parks got at the time...) Even though there's nothing revolutionary about the design any more, some of my fav coasters (Dueling Dragons, Raptor, Montu) are of this type. Maybe something "biggest & fastest" of this type? A new "Bat" would be particularly nostaligic :-) 2) A B&M Dive Machine. While I can agree with the argument these are somewhat of a "one trick pony", there's nothing else like it in the regional market. (And, I can honestly say that SheiKra was one of the only coasters I can remember in the past 15 years or so that actually made me feel a little nervous the first time riding it...) 3) A Maverick-type coaster with a custom layout (first seat is one of my best rides on anything). Maybe they could return Action Zone back to the jungle theming of the old WAH era and make it jungle themed (as opposed to Maverick's western theme...) 4) A B&M Giga The thing I want to see least is a wing rider/Gatekeeper clone. Not that I have any thing against Gatekeeper or wing riders, my feelings on this are purely selfish--I'd like some variety between the two parks I visit most frequently (CP & KI). If KI and CP puts in duplicate installations (WindSeeker, Delirium--granted that one was under two different owners, so I can't blame CF for that), it makes the variety that I can experience as a park-goer more limited. It will be interesting to see if CF *finally* does use the "Banshee" name for something...instead of just their most frequenly used "teaser" name. Again, just my thoughts...I'm far from an expert (I consider myself more of a "discerning consumer" :-))2 points

My apologies if my message was misconstrued; I think it will be a coaster too. It is time, in my opinion, for another flat like the Monster, Scrambler, and Shake, Rattle & Roll to come to the park.2 points

So what happens to the families with smaller children? Does the entire demographic get neglected and the crowds--along with their money--go elsewhere? Yes Crypt. That is exactly what I'm saying. By building a giga, they will probably need to remove all of Planet Snoopy rides effectively neglecting everyone with small kids and driving them into the arms of traveling carnivals and circuses who will be be the only ones around to provide any rides for people with small kids. Families with teen, pre teen, and growth disorder children will rejoice. Well, it is festival season right now.....2 points

I can tell you They doesn't include KIC members. I believe all the decisions are still made at 1 Cedar Point Drive, what else would Rob Decker, Corporate Vice President of Planning & Design do?2 points
-
Wonder who they is? The GM? Mr. Ouimet? The Board of Directors? At Six Flags, the local management is given a budget and attendance/demographic goals. How to get there is determined locally. Under Mr. Kinzel, nearly all, including the smallest, decisions were made at 1 Cedar Point Drive.2 points

Remember, though, Kings Island has had a multiplicity of managements, owners and visions. What is in 2013 is very different than 2005, 2000, 1993, 1989, 1979 or 1972.2 points
