  1. I thought this was a neat find and one that many here would appreciate. A friend of mine set up a dealer booth this past weekend at the Cincinnati Comic Expo and someone brought in these two old KI parking signs. I considered purchasing one, but they are massive. He may still have then, so if anyone is interested, contact me and I will hook you up with the seller. Enjoy!

  2. Sometimes I feel like working at the Kentucky Kingdom marketing department would be a bit like this: Come to think of it, I think this screenshot represents the Kingdom rather well. From the advertising, to the finances, to the guest count... And even the setting! - Homestar92, who carefully chose the correct level from which to take his screenshot.

  3. Thanks. For the assist Ryan and the mention Interpreter, I miss all the fun here but building Avatar Land has been far more time consuming than what I thought it would be. Speaking of running I will be running the full Chicago Marathon on October 12thin a little over two weeks. I will once again be running as a team member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am a bit proud that in two years time I have accomplished a lot physically but more than that I have raised $17,737.00 for cancer research. The family is driving me crazy wanting to get to the park ASAP. Hope to see you all real soon here or there!

  4. Living with two non-Star Wars fans, I get where you're coming from, but personally I would love to see an expanded Star Wars section. I've loved the series since I first saw Episode IV in the theater as a kid in 1977 (it's the first movie I remember seeing in the theater). The Star Wars weekends the DHS has each June are a huge draw for the park, and with the franchise being revitalized I could see this happening. However, I do agree with you about Avatar Land. When it was first announced I just groaned. I didn't care for the movie at all, and to base a whole new section of a park with multiple attractions on one movie, even if it is the highest grossing movie of all time, just seemed ridiculous to me. Yes, I know there are plans for more Avatar films, but so far the Avatar franchise has not proven to have the staying power of Star Wars... perhaps in time it will. Maybe it's just my dislike of the film that's clouding my opinion of Avatar Land. I'll more than likely see Avatar 2 when it eventually comes out (just to give the franchise a second chance), and I'm sure I'll visit Avatar Land at some point and may even end up liking it. I'm not really into Harry Potter but I appreciate all the detail that Universal put into Hogsmeade at IoA (haven't been back since Diagon Alley opened), and I consider HP & The Forbidden Journey to be the best dark ride on the planet. Perhaps Avatar Land will impress me just as much. I'm open.

  5. Talked to Don today. I asked him about WiFi. He said, "We're working on it." There was no real indication of a time frame, but it's clearly somewhere on their plate.

  6. ^Chris Sawyer has said that many of the stages in the first RollerCoaster Tycoon game were inspired by real parks. This one just happens to be one of the more obvious correlations. Ironically, the second game had real Six Flags parks in it and was released during their ownership of KK. And yet, it did not make an appearance. Though you could go on a Great Adventure to a particular Mountain.

  7. ^ Platinum passes are currently marketed as "Cedar Fair platinum passes"; it should be possible to renew at any Cedar Fair park, technical issues aside. I would recommend visiting Guest Services at the park. Ask to renew your Cedar Point platinum pass into a Kings Island platinum pass with Kings Island renewal perks. Before you leave, ask them to verify that you have a working pass for both 2014 and 2015.

  9. I think it's a little silly to imagine that our choices are a wooden coaster or wifi. I think some folks may be overestimating the cost of such a project. Would it be cheap? No. But $10 - $15 million to equip the park with wifi? I don't think so. Pyro, some of us here DON'T take our smart devices. But it's not a black and white topic. Just because you have a cell phone in the park with you doesn't mean you're sitting on benches tweeting and completely missing nature and coasters. Just because you leave your phone in the car doesn't mean you're having some transcendental experience connecting with the park and appreciating its gardens. Like it or not, you're not going to convince everyone or even most people to leave their electronics at home. It's 2014 and wifi is more of a basic service than a premium upgrade anymore. It's expected at major, large public places. And that is not a horrible thing. When folks Instagram a photo of Banshee or follow @KingsIslandPR on Twitter, they're not only providing free marketing for the park; they're also interacting with the park in new ways. People used to bring / buy disposable cameras. Now, all of their friends get to see well-filtered, high-quality photos of Kings Island instantly on Instagram, and connect with others who use the geotag. You can talk about Kings Island while you're there, ask the park questions, join conversations, and participate in giveaways on Twitter. That's not a disconnect from the park-going experience. It's a new way to re-connect.

  10. At the end of the day, you count it the way you want to count it. Who cares how you do it? It is an interesting concept. But when does something cease being what it was and becomes something new. Many people will buy a classic car, yank off the id plates, strip the car down to the frame, rebuild the frame, then rebuild the entire car using new or remanufactored pieces, slap the original id badges on the car, and claim it as the same vehicle.... I will say its a different ride because the park states it's a different ride. The experience will be different and that's enough for me.

  11. And yet, per the paper that I received (AFTER I had paid the cost of renewing my pass, mind you - not before) thanking me for "my continued support and enthusiasm" they have already "announced" most of the new things for next year: T3 (née T2) Raging Rapids River Ride The Enterprise (I feel like the latter two were SUPPOSED to open this year and it never happened, seeing as they are both labeled on the park map) Two new "family thrill rides" This is complete conjecture, but I would expect a couple new shops and such to open as well, as opening Raging Rapids and T3 will require the opening of a whole new section of the park.

  19. There's still footings across from Banshee's drop though, between our new inverted roller coaster and Adventure Express. They're remnants from the turn-around at the top of the lift hill. Regarding track, it used to be stored out in the field past Flight of Fear. Here's a photo from then, courtesy RCDB.com:

  20. I believe the are correct. In fact, I think they were removed before the end of the 2013 season. This is correct, the footings are long gone. They always reminded me of some sort of ancient ruins.

  22. And while you're visiting Idlewild, you will be conveniently located near my personal favorite amusement park... Phantom, Jack Rabbit, Thunderbolt, Bayern Kurve, the best Musik Express I've ever ridden, Kangaroo, Noah's Ark, Potato Patch.... I could go on and on and on. I even put a Kennywood license plate frame on Mr. Blue Sky. For me to adorn my most prized possession with their name... It says a lot about my love for that park! And for added bonus points, the ideal route back to Cincinnati from Kennywood passes right through New Concord, OH, the happiest place on Earth!

  25. The announcement may be on a Thursday, but its also a school/work day in Fall, when most people don't really think about amusement parks, at least compared to the attention of doing this in August. 1:30 pm? Really?

  26. Let's be honest. The marketing at KK this year has been comically inept. I think the average 13 year old coaster enthusiast would have done a better job of it.

  27. I certainly hope so. It's high time Messrs Hart and Lunsford put some more of their own money into the park. People forget both are shrewd, VERY wealthy businessmen. Both made much of their fortune using other people's money.

  29. I feel like there should be some credit that comes from being an enthusiast long enough to see major changes. Especially since most of the changes we see are losses of coasters we have known. It's exciting to see a change that is likely to breathe life into an older coaster rather than a dismantling (or steeling old woodies). I don't personally keep track of the coasters I've ridden (I don't even remember for certain what parks I've been to, it's been so long). If I did, I would at least note when I have ridden a ride under multiple name/theming changes, or when the ride experience had made significant changes (addition of seatbelts or minor changes in restraints I probably wouldn't count, but a significant difference in train style like Rougarou, or the backwards Racer, I would). As long as there is no governing body for "credits", though, I say whatever floats your boat. It's not something anyone outside of enthusiasts would care about (and not even some of us) and among those, there are going to be endless differences of opinion about what "counts."

  32. A Kings Island Platinum Pass renewed at Dorney was given Dorney renewal pricing, BUT, I was told to use the KI Platinum Pass until its expiration, then use the Dorney one. Renewal pricing, but not renewal benefits. So long as it works at Carowinds, Kings Island, Dorney and all other Cedar Fair parks, I'm good...

  33. rcdb.com says: * Goliath at Six Flags Great America is wood. * It does not list Haunted House at Camden Park as a coaster, yet does list Underground at Iowa's Adventureland. * And, as you noted, after many, many years of not listing powered coasters, now it does. Sometimes. I don't count it as an arbiter of things coaster any more. It's methodology no longer makes sense to me....

  34. I would like to have wifi in such areas reserved for sit down usage like Festhaus , Hanks Burrito Shack, Oktoberfest Beer Garden, Reds Hall of Fame Grill, Picnic Grove, and wave pools in Soak City. These areas are used frequently for guests in the park for resting and checking their smartphones. I would enjoy having some free wifi to enjoy watching Netflix during rain delays Sent from my iPhone using Taptalk

  36. Most of the park rides are open during Haunt, except SRR, CF and WWC (Haunt locale), and ALL the rides in Planet Snoopy. The park wasn't that busy on opening night last Friday. I arrived at 6:15, did every maze and scare zone and every open ride save for FOF and BLSC without Fright or Fast Lane by the time the park closed. The longest maze lines were for Kill Mart, Madame Fatale and Tombstone, which were all only about 10-15 minutes. Rides were virtual walk ons save for BLSC and FOF (30 minutes). Diamondback was listed at 30 when I got there, but halfway through the line, she went down for about 20 minutes (they closed the que behind me). Once open, I was on in about 10 minutes.

  37. My grandma, who just celebrated her 90th birthday on September 8th, used to go to Chester Park as a girl. She said that Coney was just too hard to get to but her family could get to Chester by taking the trolley. She said that's where she rode her first roller coaster and where they used to go swimming.

  38. RCDB is counting them as one and the same, which cements my decision to count them as one. With the exception of my not counting powered coasters, my counting ideology is basically the same as theirs. Of course, RCDB claims it has four inversions. I contend that it has three. Inclined loops are not inversions.

  39. I believe they were all redone when Hannah Barbera land received an expansion in 1998. Additionally, as new attractions were added you would see new parking signs arranged with the same color scheme and new logos. I.E. Drop Zone and Face/Off were added as well as Son of Beast in their respective years. Eventually, these were all gone too.

  40. Most people I know can't really even distinguish a wood coaster from a steel coaster. Nor, as I recently learned, can my uncle in Chicago, who recently texted me to inform me that Goliath was the best wooden coaster he had ever ridden. But that's another story entirely...

  41. Here's an idea, why don't you go to the park without your cellphones, laptops, Kindles, iPads, etc, and enjoy nature and roller coasters.

  42. If done right, pretty fast. True, but that won't come cheap, even for a school system. We even get what is called E-rate sometimes (we pay only 15% of the cost) and even that is not cheap. Let's just say, for KI to do it right we could have another coaster (maybe not a B&M, but a nice little woddie) or even several new flats in the park. Which would you rather have WiFi or more rides? Being a customer that drives 2 hrs one way to the park, invest the money in the rides, I can get on WiFi anytime thanks!

  47. Speaking of fog and how thick it is, last year I was walking past the Planet Snoopy Grill through a patch of very thick fog. A group of teenage girls was walking the opposite direction toward me through the same patch of fog. As soon as I started to become visible to them (about five feet away), the girls screamed and started freaking out until I was fully visible. They thought I was a monster when they first saw my shape.

  49. ^I'm also anti-Haunt and absolutely despise all the focus that gets put on it (like building permanent structures to use ONLY for Haunt). However, I'm also glad that for at least part of the day on the weekends are dedicated to a family-type event. Even though I hate walking around the park and seeing all the tacky decorations (I hate anything that glorifies death, mutilation, etc.), at least I'm able to come out to the park for a little bit and enjoy the fall weather and the rides. I, too, will be looking forward to next April when we're back to the normal operating season.

  50. Oh boy... Halloween Haunt. I, for one, can't wait until I get to enjoy another great season at Kings Island in April! - homestar92, who is no fan of Halloween Haunt, and will miss the part of the season when the park doesn't look tacky and stupid. And not having absurdly thick fog that reduces visibility to dangerous levels.
