Kid's first roller coaster ride....
markr replied to shark6495's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
You make an interesting point. I have always been an outspoken critic against forcing kids on rides before they are ready for them. Part of the problem with the supercoasters is that it seems kids are pushed onto them before they try some of the smaller, tamer coasters. In the video I see that the kid's first coaster is Mamba, a 200 ft hypercoaster similar to Magnum. I think you should start kids out with the more moderately sized grown-up coasters like Racer and Blue Streak ( Yes, call me old-fashioned but I still consider them grown-up coasters as opposed to kiddie rides. ) and move up in the totem pole. -
Kid's first roller coaster ride....
markr replied to shark6495's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
My first coaster was a kiddie coaster similar to Little Bill's Giggle Coaster at a park north of Cincinnati called Pee Wee Valley. (It is now a trailer park. ) My first grown up coaster was Shooting Star at Coney. -
Planet Snoopy (bringing your children?) in 2010.

Is this the same park that is selling Halloween Haunt VIP tours that are also available to young children...no age restriction? Haunt is open to all ages. There is simply a parent advisory that it may not be suitable for children. -

Was at CP last weekend and the kids seemed to be having a blast at both Camp Snoopy and Planet Snoopy. Kids are kids wherever you go and I wouldn't expect it to be any different at KI. -
For me the best part of the season was all the wonderful bunch of people from KIC whom I got to meet and ride with-Kifan 1980, Angie, Kat, Ki Man, Avatar and so many others.

My Opinion on the Future of Cedar Fair
markr replied to BoddaH1994's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I feel that Cedar Fair has brought back the KI that I grew up loving, which included the wonderful live shows and great, world class thrill rides. ( DB-need I say more on this subject?) My only complaint is the high prices of the food and the quality of the food. It seems like the only place where they seem to "get it" is Outer Hanks with wonderful food at a reasonable price and huge portions. -
Yes, it's just been quite the summer. With the ex going through chemo I've not really gotten to do any kind of travel and not been to any parks other than SF. I'm not complaining ... it is what it is and some things just have to be done. As far as the dog, they said it's at a treatable phase but if untreated will effect the other organs. I told the vet that whatever they need to do they can do. My best wishes and prayers for both your dog and ex's full recovery.

Only went to GL once when it was Six Flags in 2000. While the rides were great ( Batman,ie Dominator, The Villain, Dipper and Wolf Bobs, 2 great woodies with the old buzz bars) I found the park to be very dirty and the food was lousy.

While I support bringing Peanuts to KI, I must admit that KI won't be the same without Scooby. Scooby was like the unofficial host of KI much like Micky Mouse at Disney. We will miss you, Scooby, but you will not be forgotten.

Coney Island had this system when I was a kid. You had a choice between paying for ride tickets or the pay one price wrist band. The nice thing about this system was that it was more family friendly, meaning, grandparents who perhaps did not enjoy riding could be included in family outings without paying through the nose a huge admission price. While the pay-one-price system for tickets and season passes is nice ( especially for us coaster enthusiasts ) it is kind of sad to see those wonderful family outings at Coney to be a thing of the past.

I just got back from another fun trip at CP with my friend Derek. I'm not going to go into any details as they would simply be a repetition of my old trip reports. I will just highlight a few things worth noting. On Friday, we got a trimless ride on Magnum. ( Nicknamed by most of you Maggie. My new nickname is Peggy which is also a nickname for Margaret-hee,hee, hee.) I think they gave us a trimless ride since they were only running two trains. I have to say, that hurt. We were literally standing in our seats on the bunny hills and that hurt our legs-those lap bars are like solid concrete. Rode Peggy on Saturday without the trim and was much easier on the legs. However, they should get new lap bars which are smoother. We also decided to give Maxair a whirl to compare it to Delirium. I must say I agree that Maxair is a bit more thrilling with a longer cycle plus the feel of the lake breeze. We took a night ride on Mildred last night ( my own nickname for Millenium Force-another hee hee hee ) in the second row and got killed by bugs-that hurt almost as much as a ride in the rain. Another matter of note happened during ERT on Maverick yesterday morning. A boy, about 8, was in the back seat of the train with his mom on the launch track, the second train to launch. The boy was screaming in fright. The ride crew ended up letting him and his parents off the ride. In my opinion, the right thing to do. I saw another similar incident on Mildred when a boy and his mother were in the second to last seat-the boy was crying as the train left the station. When will parents learn not to force their kids to ride rides when they are obviously terrified? Not only that, putting them in the back of the train-I find it is best to start coaster beginners at the front of the train. Finally, we found out from a ride on Paddlewheel Excursions from our captain that both Paddlewheel Excursions and Shoot the Rapids will coexist with each other with the same theming. So glad Paddlewheel Excursions will be staying as it is a tradition at CP to be treasured. All and all, a very pleasant weekend with perfect weather. Most of the rides were near walk-ons on Friday, except for about an hour wait for Maverick. Saturday wasn't as bad as most people would think a holiday weekend would be. We just did ERT on Maverick this morning ( Sunday ) before leaving and it was more crowded than Saturday. Hope to maybe get a Holloweekend trip to CP before the season ends

SHOOT THE RAPIDS at Cedar Point
markr replied to firehawkboy's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
The ride looks like a lot of fun except for the fact it does look like you get real wet. I love water rides but only when it is real hot out, ie high 80's and 90's. CP tends to be chilly early in the season and in the fall, so it seems like the demand for the ride will be limited by the weather. And yes, I plan to buy a platinum pass for CP next year even if they are not building another coaster. How can you complain when they still have TTD, MF,Raptor, Gemini, Mantis, Maverick, Wicked Twister, Blue Streak, and Magnum? That's quite a collection of coasters. -
^My experience on SOB was so bad that I wouldn't let my niece and nephew ride it when I took them last year.

I always avoided the Backround Barbeque because it was my understanding that it wasn't real barbeque, ie those awful steamed hamburgers instead of grilled hamburgers. It was also my understanding that the food was the same food as the inside buffet and the last time I ate at the inside buffet back in the spring, the food was awful. If in fact the food is really barbequed, I would be willing to give it another go. Otherwise, the price to me would not be worth it.

I agree 100 percent.

I disagree that there is not high recognition of the Peanuts characters among the kids. You are telling me that they don't recognize Snoopy? I don't buy it. My nephews certainly recognize Snoopy and the other Peanuts characters. Maybe they are only on network TV a few times a year but you forget about their exposure on the home video/dvd market. Plus the TV commercials such as the Metlife ads. The Peanuts characters are known all over the world, probably more famous than the Nickelodeon characters.
-
A lot of this discussion seems to focus on whether or not Peanuts are still relevant to kids because of their age. ( Close to 60 years old. ) Well Looney Tunes ( Bugs Bunny, Daffy Dug, Tweety, etc. ) have been around since the Great Depression when my parents were kids and my 11-year old nephews laugh their heads off at those cartoons. I also seem to recall some characters created by a man named Disney named Micky, Donald, Goofy and others who don't seem to have lost their popularity despite the fact that they have been around even longer than the Looney Tunes.

Can't wait to watch it. I am sure it will bring back many wonderful memories of when I was a kid at both Coney and KI.

King's Dominion Announces Planet Snoopy for 2010!
markr replied to nhimes90's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
In response to some feeling that Peanuts are outdated and that today's kids won't accept them because they are old, I was recently watching Bugs Bunny cartoons with my 11 year old nephews and they laughed just as hard as they do watching Spongebob. Looney Tunes have been around much longer than Peanuts and Nickelodeon but today's kids enjoy them just as much as my generation and the depression/WWII generation of my parents. If the Peanuts' reception by kids at CP is any indication, I think KI will do just fine with Peanuts. -
Joint TR: 4th Coming and Rocky Horror Picture Show
markr replied to Justin_M17's topic in Trip Reports
I remember my first showing of Rocky Horror back in 1978 when I was 17. I wonder how much the "script" has changed. Is Brad still "a..hole?" Is Janet still "Weisssss"? -

CP in fact did have the Berenstein Bears before Camp Snoopy. -
Actually, I didn't hear the loud B and M roar earlier in the season that I hear now. I think something must have been changed to give it that roar. New wheels maybe?
