FOFreak Posted February 16, 2013 Share Posted February 16, 2013 (I was a bit conflicted about where to put this topic, but since it has to do primarily with park regulations, I opted to place it here.) I recently purchased a GoPro Hero 3 primarily for skiing, skateboarding, and underwater purposes. But I recently pondered the possibility of it being used for POV video purposes in parks like Kings Island and Holiday World. For those unfamiliar with the GoPro line of cameras, it is a camera that is advertised to be able to be securely mounted almost anywhere. (i.e. Helmets, cars, handlebars, skateboards, surfboards, ect.) And from my experiences it has been a very reliable camera. Very secure. So my question is: with the rules in parks about loose articles of clothing and cameras/cell phones on rides, could a GoPro camera mounted to a helmet or a chest mount be allowed to be worn on rides at Kings Island or Holliday World? It would be very neat to get crisp POV's of roller coasters and/or waterslides like Mammoth and Wildebeast with my GoPro. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TombRaiderFTW Posted February 16, 2013 Share Posted February 16, 2013 I couldn't give you an exact reference, but I seem to recall one of those parks qualifying GoPros as loose articles. I have seen a helmet-mounted camera be rejected by ride ops at Kings Island within the past year. I expect all Cedar Fair parks would have the same policy but that isn't always true. Why risk your safety and the safety of others to "get that one shot". malem Posted February 16, 2013 Share Posted February 16, 2013 It's not just loose articles; photography on most rides is expressly prohibited. For safety reasons, we cannot permit on-ride photography of any kind on any ride other than Eiffel Tower, K.I. & Miami Valley Railroad.At Holiday World cameras aren't permitted onto rides at all, even if secured in a zippered pouch/pocket. Jr for Birdy Posted February 17, 2013 Share Posted February 17, 2013 Just keep all your cameras and such put away.Im sick of being stopped on lift hills from people wanting to record.I told some guy on The Beast last year," If that camera comes back and hits my kid in the face,you might not make it back to the station".I was joking kinda,but he got the idea and put it away.I get hit by spit,pop,coins,bugs,I dont need a camera in my face! But the only cameras that I know that have been allowed have been by professionally credentialed media types that have filmed POVs for TV shows with the express approval of Kings Island's PR department. From prior eye-witness accounts while at the park of how strict they are about those rules (with good reason) I just can't see them letting you. Although if we were to add a "POV" section to KICentral.com then maybe we could have you or someone else get permission to record all of the ride POV's and put them on the site...... Unless you are a member of the media or park-approved shoot where the camera is mounted to the train while being supervised by the park - usually not during public operation, they are always going to say no. GoPros are considered loose articles just like a camera with a wrist strap is, therefore parks do not allow them. The list of parks that you can POV at is very, very small. As a ride host at Dollywood, I can tell you that we don't allow GoPros, and as a former ride associate at Kings Island, we definitely didn't allow them. I remember making someone take a chest-mounted camera off at The Beast. Electronics are not allowed...period. We even went as far as making people take head phones out/off and put them away. Holiday World will take it a step further. Once they see it, you WILL leave it in the station or get off the ride. They don't tolerate it at all. Half the time they won't let you have a cell phone in your pocket on the ride if they know it's there. No way would they let you have a camera outside of your pocket. Be safe and don't record POV's. All they do is cause problems or hit people in the face. "Oh, I won't drop it. I'm always careful," you say. Guess what, no one ever drops it on purpose. If you want a pov - you tube it. coasterfanatic83 Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 Not trying to sound like a smart-alec, but if they ride is not moving is it acceptable to take a picture or video? For example, last summer before the ride began we took a picture of my little sister on the carousel. It was technically on the ride, but the ride was not operating at the time. I understand that the carousel is a minor example, but say we were stuck on Racer's lift hill and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a new profile picture? Or stuck atop WindSeeker? The Interpreter Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 Read the post above yours. You are ON the ride at the time. Photography from/on the ride is prohibited, except Tower and Train. This is for good reason. A camera on a lift hill will for many guests just be a start for photos throughout the ride. I was shocked they let me ride with my DSLR just hanging around my neck. Then I figured out they just really don't care, so I have photos of all the dark rides at Disneyland and DCA.
