Coney Island Cincinnati to remove all rides

Huh. I never knew the Python was that old. Was it relocated from somewhere else? Also - has anyone heard mention of auctioning off any of the other park assets? I remember there was an old Ms. Pac-Man arcade cabinet languishing in the attic of the games building along with lots of spare parts for Skee-Ball, etc. Could be a veritable gold mine for someone in that line of work.

Yes just saw this on Facebook

According to RCDB, Python was relocated to Coney Island from Splash Zone Waterpark in Wildwood, New Jersey. It only started there in 1996 though so who knows what history it has beyond that.

Apparently it's from 1974. I'm really thinking about going to the auction tomorrow to see if I can't pick up a sign that says Coney Island on it.

I got up bright and early and headed to the sale this morning.  Souvenir hunters, former employees and amusement park aficionados were all over the place.  As my favorite game in the arcade was Skee-Ball, I gladly forked over $100 for a piece of Coney history.  Now I have to figure out what to do with it.  A smaller sign with the old Coney logo was only $20.

Here were some of the other items on offer.  Most of the signs were snapped up quickly, but the remainders will likely be found on Facebook Marketplace pretty soon.

It was a little odd to see some of the games that I used to work on with a price tag on them.  They were asking $7,500 for the water race game - not so sure about that given it didn't usually work 100% correctly.

And finally, some daylight photos of the current ride deconstruction process.  I was surprised to see that virtually nothing remains from the Pepsi Python.  Sadly I couldn't get photos of all the rides as there was a security guard on patrol.

It is really hard to see those photos with those rides completely gone.  I spent many year and many hours of my life down there running those rides and being a manager in the rides department.

I will be returning next year, working over at Sunlite Water Adventure.  I hope that Coney can be successful without the rides.  But my personal opinion is that they will struggle.  The rides filled a perfect niche, and my son loved all the kiddy rides and the Scream Machine.  I was hoping to take my daughter there eventually to ride the rides too.

Keep in mind that the closure of the rides was announced suddenly. It may be more that KI/CF didn't have time to plan the acquisition of any former Coney rides. They'd have to account for it budget-wise and also figure out where they were going to put the rides, and that assumes they don't need major maintenance.

I believe the Flying Bobs was a portable model anyway, which wouldn't fit well at KI. Not sure about Tilt-a-Whirl.

While everyone is still sad, here are a few photos I never posted from the summer of 2015.  What a shame it was to see the Trabant in this condition.

(re: The Trabant pics) That stinks! I remember seeing that as a kid (I've only been to Coney a few times as a kid - though I did see the park from the line to get into Warped Tour last year) and it looked interesting.

Also, on a semi-related note, I wonder whatever happened to that Himalaya type ride (people used to mistakenly identify it as a "roller coaster") at Sports Plus* in Sharonville; is that still there?

I  wish I would've known about that sale. I totally would've bought that Ms. Pacman machine.

Not a good idea. It was in the same non-operating condition as it was when I tested it out five years ago.  They stashed it back into the loft, then tried to put a $500 price tag on it at the sale.  You could get a fully working game in better shape for around the same price.

Arcade and pinball machines are normally in the $3,000-$5,000 for used cabinets.

Now if you are talking about scale models like Arcade 1Up then yes $300-500 but those aren’t the same quality as a full size arcade cabinet.

If I ever finish my living room remodel then I want an Arcade 1Up machine. I would love to have a full size arcade cabinet/pinball machine but I will never have that kind of money.

It is a way to get more people to utilize the deep end of the pool.

Also from Coney`s website:

The Challenge Zone is part of Coney Island’s new multiyear investment plan that will culminate with the 100th anniversary of Sunlite Pool in 2025.

Coney Island will be completely gone in 10 years.

I think statements like these are ridiculous. When I was younger we had Coney Island passes and not King’s Island passes. We had the rides added too but never went over to the rides. We maybe went twice the whole year. The rides were nothing and not why you go to Coney Island.

As long as Coney continues to improve and even expand. They need to figure out the parking lot and expand it into the rides area. That will give them room to expand the pool area into the parking lot. It all depends on how they expand and continue to grow.

The problem is the passes for Coney Island are $129.00. More expensive than Kings Island and being within less than an hour of each other there isn't much to draw me there.

I understand that but look at it from the Kentucky side. My parents didn’t like the drive up even if it was only 30 minutes from Coney. You spend all day and are wore out then have to drive an hour home. Which I am happy to do for my family becuase we love roller coasters but if you don’t I would rather have a pool then a wave pool. Coney has a niche as long as they continue to separate themselves from say the YMCA or even your HOA community.

My wife and I discuss this every year when it comes to passes for our family. Kings Islands is definitely the better deal, but as far as location (we are in Amelia) and the fact that my wife just wants to lay in the pool on a raft or hang out in the deep end of the pool, we ultimately choose Coney because there is no place for my wife to relax at KI in a pool.

We actually live in NKY and drive past Coney on 275 depending on the route we take. I guess I can see the appeal but with river bend right and a casino there I do see that area being some prime real-estate as well for hotels, bars, ect. Only time will tell.

That is for the Adventure Pass.  A Splash pass, which includes admission into Sunlite Water Adventure is $89.95, which is cheaper than a KI pass.  https://coneyislandpark.com/tickets-passes/season-passes/
