I agree I would be highly disappointed in the Cedar Fair Company if they mainly focused on JUST family. I mean what are the thrill seekers supposed to do? Build our own? Cedar Point is supposed to be An amazing park with cutting edge coasters , not family coaster that go up 20 feet high and drop 6 feet at 11 MPH. They already have a kiddie area in the Cedar Fair parks why just not keep it the way it's going? Ughhh... I'm so confused It may be that families spend more money in the park than the enthusiast niche who wants the biggest fastest etc. Plus in the park, I think Racer as a family ride. Fun, air time, not too fast. Nostalgic. So family fun doesnt have to be boring. Heck look at Universal. Spiderman/Men In Black/Simpsons. All family fun rides that all want to ride. I would even say the Harry Potter ride, but not sure if its a bit on the thrilling side... see above post. Is The Racer a boring ride? Maybe to you if its not a thrill ride its boring, but many many people enjoy rides that they can ride not with just the daredevil in the family but with all members. Sort of like putting Firehawk smack dab at the in the middle of what could have been a park expansion? or when Paramount replaced a nice relaxing green space family ride with a big ugly junkyard coaster? Long drawn out arguments are what keep these boards alive. You are allowed your opinion. 10 years ago, I would have agreed with you. But now I am nearing 30, and would like rides that I can ride with my 50+ parents and in a few years rides I can enjoy with my kid and his grandparents. Personal rant/story: I went to CP a few years ago. Wife and I rode everything. We are park goers. We enjoy the park but to be honest the thrill of the rides was awesome, but not many of the rides were "re-ride fun" for me. I mean TTD was awesome because of the launch, but then after that it was just a big drop. It was great, but now that I have rode it, it would lead me back to the park. Versus when I went to Busch gardens, Griffin was a great unique and I loved Alpengeist and Big Bad Wolf. Not to mention the fun rides in Universal. At KI,rides that I find just plain fun are beast and racer and flight deck. White water canyon is fun as well. As I get older, I find myself looking for rides that are fun and can be rode multiple times.5 points

Reliable. A major priority for this management. Something NOT true of Son of Beast or Formula Rossa. The public cares very little about records. They care about "the best day ever."5 points

Aside from the costs associated with keeping that much material & labor just sitting around unpainted with no purpose; due to the numerous coaster types & train uniqueness for B & M, it would be hard to imagine a need for a "standard section" for stock.3 points

I think it should be noted that a family oriented ride can also be thrilling. Dollywood for example considers Wild Eagle a family coaster even working with B&M to lower the height requirement. Powder Keg at SDC also is considered a family ride and many more examples just in those two parks. I would like to add to that Cheetah Hunt just to prove Intamin can build a launched and inverting coaster that is also a family ride. Not all families have children under 48" or whatever height requirement and I'm sure Mr. Ouimet understands that you can't please every family dynamic with every addition. Maybe this time he's going after families with children over (insert height) and maybe next time we'll get something like Antique Cars that will go after an even broader demographic. My biggest point in this is don't think that just because a company is expressing a desire to please their biggest paycheck doesn't mean there can't be thrill, and when and if the thrills become lacking they can fill that void.3 points

I'm a professor of clinical and abnormal psychology, but my therapeutic degree is a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy...and during my training I specialized in child/adolescent psychopathology...so now I teach courses in that as well as therapy and general mental illness...although my favorite course to teach is the Psychology of Humor. (hence the name...my research is in...well...humor.) And you're correct; the idea was to make the diagnosis more inclusive, so when you hear that the rates of autism are skyrocketing, it does not mean that there is suddenly "more" of this disorder, there is simply more diagnosing going on for various reasons.3 points

I LOVE the loop. Don't even get me started about the B&M Flying Supermen. SuperUgh crossed with SuperBoring. I love the Vekoma Flying Dutchmen. They are excellent rides. Unlike the SuperSnore B&M Flying Supermen with their horrid, painful pretzel loops.3 points

Couple of things- and I don't know if this is the right thread to do this on, but I viewed the video here- so you tell me. I just watched the Matt O... (however its spelled) interview- and WOW, what an outstanding mind to have taken the reigns of the CF park chain. Whereas I think Kinzel was mostly about numbers and build the biggest, best attraction that makes the biggest statement and it will bring bodies in the door. I think the new CEO is about the guest experience. I love what he said that "most of the people that come in the park a second time come back because they had fun the first time." Has no interest in copying all parks into a single brand... "there are 11 brands" Building better attractions that parents will ride with their kids (but more importantly)- not "because" of their kids. the leading of his conversation leads me to think also that within CF there is a department developing akin to the Disney "Imagineers"- I could be wrong, but many things he mentioned made it seem like they are challenging designers to create things that give the customer a completely unique experience. I could be wrong, but I'm willing to place a few sheckels that whatever is being built on the former SOB grounds will be a uniquely Kings Island experience. I'm willing to bet also that there will be some cosmetic changes coming in the coming years to themed areas of the KI grounds.3 points

Just my two cents. After long periods of thought I have my own conclusion of the new attraction. I do in fact, after this long debate, believe that this is a B&M invert, themed to Banshee. Now this will go through some sort of camp possibly or a new area where a camp is the theme. Now if it were to be in a camp setting, here is my hypothesis. You will begin in a cabin themed station, where you will begin the ascent up to the peak, 308' in the air, to where you will do a curved dive for the ground, after you will begin to go around, and through cabins. As well there will probably be some sort of corkscrew inversion, possibly a loop at the other hand as well. This is just an early hypothesis though, my final statements will probably be one or so days before the announcement of what the attraction and the name will be. In this light I hope we can come closer to an over all consensus on the matter at hand, while not being called to an off hand topic that has little to no meaning to an official idea on what the new attraction could be and the name of it can be. As well in light of my previous posts of donkeys, I was actually thinking of them and looking at many when I could. I do like donkeys and I would like to see a donkey themed coaster in my lifetime.2 points

I bet there's going to be a big race of the current "lurkers" once this new ride is announced to see who gets it's name as their username first so that there is no random numbers, hyphens, or underscores in it. Oh, wait a minute, there already is a user with the screen name "Banshee" who registered years before any of these rumors started. SPOOOOKY...2 points

Please, stop with the donkeys. This is (thankfully) not Theme Park Review. They aren't funny there, either. Oh, please. At least Theme Park Review doesn't have any Big Sexy(s) I think the floorless coaster is a gimmick, you only noticed it in the first row. I think Diamondback acts just as much as a floorless, the way the seats are so high up and the open air style. Also (On Superman Krypton Coaster) it was a bit odd you could actually kick the row infront of you and I'm not that tall at 5'8". Krypton Coaster was great, the way it interacted with the environment, but I don't see as many interesting possibilities here.2 points

SO KI has never been on the cutting edge? Someone help me here, but Racer (started coaster revolution) Beast (record breaker) Bat (prototype) Vortex (first coaster with 6 inversions) King Cobra (Prototype) FoF (Prototype) TRTR (First Giant top spin?) Those are just the first of their kind cutting edge type rides... Now i feel like a daredevil for putting my butt in those rides. I loved the prototype phase.2 points

Psycopathology? So whats your over all field? Psychology? Speech Path over here. You are right this topic is of unique interest to me. I am thinking of some of my kids I work with. When they are having a great day, they would have no problems on an E-Stop. But if they are having a bad day, man o man... **when I am talking about children with Autism, I am usually looking at children with more severe cases. If I am not mistaken the removal of Aspergers was to make Autism the one big catch all with 3 levels, low mid and severe correct?2 points

There maybe a hidden reason to the no camping sign. Countless enthusiasts practically flock to that region every day, almost camping there. My two cents? It is not the theme, it is telling enthusiasts not to "camp" at B&M or at the 'plains.2 points

The contract for the show was for 3 seasons, this year the contract was not extended. But with the way the show was run an maintained the past 2 years why would anyone want to extend the contract? I believe they should have unwrapped the lights during the off-season and let the trees breath again.2 points

It's not just the waiting in line that is the underlying issue, but the break from the norm. (i.e.: the special needs person is not able to watch a certain TV program at a certain time due to breaking national news. They will not understand why the program is not on TV.) For instance: there have been many issues with WS. What would happen if WS stops at the top for an extended amount of time (aka- breaking the norm)? Those with special needs have been known to have incredible strength. Could they get out of the restraint? It's a scary thought.2 points

Looks like I'll go to Screamscape for Kings Island decent updates. Thanks guys!2 points

I was thinking the same thing, but couldn't think of a proper way to say it. Waiting is certainly not a Kings Island thing, it happens every day. If an individual with autism can be taught that when they go to a restaurant, there will be a waiting period between ordering food and eating, can they also be taught that there will be a period between deciding to ride a ride and actually riding it? It's an honest question, so don't be offended by my ignorance. Maybe one of the many in this thread who are far more familiar with the situation can throw in their $.02. Boddah, children can be taught but it takes a long time, and many many many practices before the child/adult can "get it." But each situation needs to be taught. Children with autism have a very difficult time generalizing a skill. A child with autism may learn to wait for food at home, but in a restaurant does not understand the waiting period. They may learn to wait at Olive garden but do not understand the wait at outback. In each new environment the skill needs to be learned. In SpecEd we are taught that a typical student learns a concept with 6-8 unique opportunities. A child with autism can take 10-20 times longer to learn a skill. Or in other terms. A child will take waiting in Beasts line 8 times before they understand that waiting = a ride, and acting out is not appropriate. A child with autism may require 80-160 opportunities to learn the exact same skill. This is not counting any "weird" sensory distractions that may occur (Too hot, too cold, music too loud, they are tired, meds are different, different time of day, etc). Plus the child/adult would need to learn to wait at each ride. So learning to wait at The Beast is a different experience than waiting for Flight Deck or DT, or even Boo Blasters. Parents are also integral into this process. I just had a coworker take her 20 year old son to Disney. She began prepping him for a possible plane delay 8 months ago. If the plane got delayed in Jersey, he has a history of acting out and she was afraid he would make a scene on the plane and get forcibly removed. So she had to go over what to do 3 times a day for the last 8 months, just in case the plane is delayed. He has been going to Disney since he was 4 so he really understands waiting, and actually yells at people using the fast pass system (he is an enthusiast even if he doesnt know it). So long answer longer, yes a child/adult with autism can be taught but its a very very long process. Sometimes a parent and a child do not need the extra stress of waiting. Some of these children/adult dont realize how strong they are. They may jump on the back of a fellow park patron, spin around, spit, climb the rails, or punch just because they are being over stimulated and dont understand what is happening. Funny side story. My first day in the Autism classroom, I touched the desk of one of my students. He didnt know how to take it so he flipped the desk, removed his shirt, spit (blew raspberries), and then opened the door to the closet and climbed to the top of the door. Just lifted himself right up. All in about 2-3 seconds. EDITED: added an additional line about learning at different coasters2 points

Ugh. I'm done trying to figure out this mess. Something in my gut tells me my long-held dreams about KI are going to remain just that...dreams. I think KI has seen the last of its significant steel coasters to be built for a number of years to come. I no longer think the current project is going to be what I was hoping it would be. After hearing more about Ouimet's thoughts for the chain, as well as reading some comments here, I'm convinced the direction of the park is to keep things tame and low key. KI is not a thrill park. It's a family park. Since each park in the chain is supposed to be a separate brand, to me that means the people who want thrills will be expected to go to CP. But we can't all make that trip, so we miss out on these world-class cutting edge coasters, because they usually always go to Ohio's "thrill park" first...CP. I'm amazed KI even built Diamondback to begin with, though that was before Ouimet took over. But it still took KI 20 years after Magnum was built to get a steel hyper. So the message I'm receiving loud and clear is that they want to keep KI a family-focused park, which means no more thrilling coasters. They tossed us a bone with Firehawk, and finally caved in and built Diamondback. But I honestly don't expect there to be anything more beyond that. This new construction is probably for a family coaster. Terp told us to look at Italian Job, so how else do you analyze that? Sorry for the cynicism. Maybe I'm wrong. Hopefully I am. My gut's just telling me I'm going to be totally disappointed later this summer. Oh well. It's not about me. I'll let you guys get back to your discussion. I'll check in later this summer to see what this "brilliant" move turns out to be.1 point

I don't know if this has been mentioned, if so I apologize. I happened to be out near the Clermont Steel Fabricators factory today... ok I was about 15 minutes away, but being an interested person with some time to burn, I took a detour and drove by it. I know we've already ruled out the dark green supports as being for another coaster, but sitting on the side of the building, I saw a large lime green piece of track. I don't have any pictures unfortunately, so if you want to wait until someone takes a picture to believe me that's fine. Not claiming this is track piece is destined for Kings Island, but thought I'd let you all know what I saw. I haven't seen it mentioned here so if I missed something just let let me know...1 point
