Coronavirus Impacting Theme Parks

It is one thing in a work environment with gloves on because you are now consciously aware and have probably been trained as part of your job, but people will touch their hair, adjust their sun glasses or regular glasses, wipe their watery eyes, remove bugs off their face (looking at you TTD at CP) all before getting off the ride... What about over the shoulder restraint rides that touch your face as you pull them down like Banshee can or I-305...I have had my sunglasses ripped off moving those restraints over my head… Plus most touch their face without even realizing it....turn your webcam on while you sit at your computer reading and typing here and then play it back and see how many times you touch your face… Oh it can through some of those... https://www.nature.com/articles/s41575-020-0295-7 https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/85315 https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=229095 -

A declining business sector anyway, but one that will not re-open now because of the virus...https://www.wlwt.com/article/west-chesters-skatetown-usa-to-close-after-17-years-in-business/32146599 -
Exactly....so does a passholder feel so entitled they would rather have an experience that they "didn't agree to when they purchased a pass" just to get into KI this season, all at the expense of a greatly devalued experience in the upcoming years? I would rather they skip a year, minimize their losses, and provide us with the experience we expect next year and the following years. If they open this year, with no new passes or renewal sales taking place come August, the experience will be degraded in the following seasons. What do they cut - shows, Grand Carnivale, WF, Haunt, alternate rides that are opened, toilet paper rationing, cut the meal plan to one meal per visit? We really don't know what they will have to cut in order to make that happen. Six Flags has already announced that they would be eliminating $40million of non-labor costs and investments announced during Q4 of 2019...what does that mean....sounds like all new for 2020 will now become all new for 2021...or an awful lot of toilet paper and light bulbs aren't being purchased As a result of making passes valid through 2021, there will be a real cost associated with them opening this year...and the impacts will certainly be seen or felt by everyone going to the park in 2021 as a result.
-
And the ability to travel has increased substantially too, so it is quicker and easier to spread. We didn't have Delta, Southwest, Singapore Airlines, etc. in 1918...For every advancement on one side, could be an advancement on another side that impacts the other side, positively or negatively... You missed the point of my post - there are lot more priorities out there before KI opens and that was why I was saying don't anticipate them opening...
-
And...as stated in the other thread...If masks and social distancing are a requirement for KI to open, where will an amusement park fall in the list of priorities to get PPE... At what percentage of park capacity could the park open and still make money? If they have to limit the number of guests to a total that is less than the calculated number to open, they won't open... Under limiting number of guests - who gets priority - pass holders that KI already has their money or guests willing to pay daily admission? If the social restricting numbers work out that all they could accommodate are pass holders and no company picnics and no daily admissions, how do they make money? How do they go about capping it - do they take the alphabet and divide it by 7 days and those with a last name of A through C get Monday, D through F get Tuesday, etc. or is it first come first serve? A lot of questions they need to answer before they can consider opening...

Especially since they just eliminated a significant source of revenue...who will be buying or renewing passes come August...nobody needs to now...There is a significant consequence from a capital expenditure standpoint if they do open this year... I can hear the first world complaints already in 2021 - "the park didn't add anything, screw this, I am not going to renew for 2022...I am not buying a pass for 2022 they aren't adding anything new..." -

Canada's Wonderland hasn't announced this yet.... And for all the reasons people have stated previously....this could mean they do not intend to open this year too... -

I will agree with you that there is far too much bad information out there. Most of it being spread by people that do not educate themselves and simply let click-bait headlines misinform them... As an example, let's just look at the current Best Buy debate going on in this thread. Despite all the evidence, both from the Best Buy website itself, dozens of articles about it, and first-hand anecdotal experiences that the stores are not allowing shoppers in their stores and it is curbside pick-up only, people still believe you can go down to your local Best Buy and walk in and browse around. If that were the case, where are the viral TikTok videos of people in defiance of this policy? We have seen videos of people defying every other policy or common sense measures, why not this one...I have seen viral videos of toilet seat lickers, spring breakers, but nobody in a Best Buy.... If we as a society can not agree on if a shopper can currently go into a Best Buy, what makes you think people will agree on covid-19 and the proper course of action? Heck, I see people trying to go thru the drive-thru at Chick-fil-A on a Sunday...or people go stand in line at the stand at KI on a Sunday... Too many people rely on bad and/or outdated information and do not educate themselves further. People formulating opinions on covid-19 based on information they heard in February and are unwilling to be open-minded as new information is presented and are unwilling to admit their first opinion is wrong are how one-sided opinions and rhetoric continue and how all the bad information passing that exists... Which freedoms are truly being violated? - People can still practice religion, buy guns and ammo, have their freedom of speech, their rights to vote, etc.. Are some of the ways to go about that a little different now in addressing this issue, sure, but you still have those freedoms. What could you do in January that you cannot do now that has you so upset? Our stay-home orders are basically lip-service and self administered (I recognize there are a few limited exceptions for those that violated something that is essentially a temporary law). Any other complaint is simply a first world issue problem. Compare how other countries dealt with this back on page 28 of this thread... Compare our freedoms to some other countries... Some of the stuff people have posted here would have them fined, jailed, or publicly lashed in some countries... Everyone in America is entitled to their opinion and everyone else in America is entitled to not agree with that opinion - one of our protected freedoms in this country. I respect someone's opinion a lot more if they can provide substance and proof as to how they formulated their opinion. Maybe I agree with it, maybe I don't. I am open-minded enough that once provided with additional information that I wasn't aware of, I am "man enough" (or person enough) to change my opinion if warranted. If their proof can be summed up as a click-bait headline and political rhetoric, it is a little harder to sway people from their up-to-date researched opinion... -

I am going to assume you either didn't read the policy in its entirely or you are a troll...or maybe you went to your local BB after March 24th and they were not following corporate policy...but I find it hard to believe that Nosy Nancy wouldn't have turned them in...their corporate policy is their corporate policy...and most state stay home orders will enforce this policy as well... Read the sentences from the corporate policy that I bolded and italicized. These are not my words, these are copy and pasted from their most recent statement. What does this mean "If, for any reason, you didn’t order the product in advance and the product is in stock in the store, one of our employees will be more than happy to go get it in the store and sell it to you while you remain in your car." ? What does this mean? "Only employees will be allowed in the store, but we are determined to serve you as fully as we can. " Their statement is written in reverse chronological order, which means the most recent press release is first. Maybe that is why people are missing it. If you blow right past the first paragraphs you miss it and get right into an older statement limiting to 10-15 shoppers... The older statements are no longer valid. They originally cut their hours and were going to allow 10-15 people in but now do not allow it. Since people apparently have trouble following a reverse chronological order, here it is in chronological order (so the most recent statement is now last): March 10th - Statement that they have upped their sanitation policies and have asked employees that do not feel well to not come to work. March 17th - Statement said they were cutting hours from 10-6 and was going to limit store to 10-15 people starting March 23rd. March 19th - Statement reminding people of reduced hours and limited guests in stores. March 22nd - Statement that said they revised policy and were going to curbside pickup only and limited delivery - no guests inside. No big items brought into a home. I originally posted just the links to the actual corporate policy as those tend to be the most accurate, but there are also lots of news articles with clickbait headlines that state they are closed as apparently headlines are what some people go by to get their news: https://www.startribune.com/best-buy-to-pay-employees-for-two-more-weeks-while-stores-remain-closed/569264792/ https://abc7chicago.com/coronavirus-closures-due-to-restaurants-closed-starbucks/6015525/ https://9to5mac.com/2020/03/22/best-buy-closing-stores-coronavirus/ https://bgr.com/2020/03/22/best-buy-closing-stores-curbside-delivery-only/ https://patch.com/california/sanmateo/california-coronavirus-starbucks-best-buy-among-store-closures https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2020/03/23/best-buy-closes-stores-to-customers-offers.html https://www.mediaplaynews.com/best-buy-reverses-course-shuts-stores/ https://www.phonearena.com/news/best-buy-stores-open-curbside-pickup-covid-19_id123189 https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/22/21189846/best-buy-curbside-pickup-home-office-coronavirus https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/03/18/coronavirus-what-stores-are-open-and-who-is-closed/2865166001/ https://www.androidauthority.com/best-buy-covid-19-1095141/ https://thebullamarillo.com/amarillo-best-buy-adds-new-customer-services-amid-covid-19/ Looks blocked off to customers to me... -

And like I said in my post, if that is true then they are operating against corporate policy as I and @coaster sally is pointing out in her post. Read the links I provided. Go down tomorrow and see if they actually let you in...from their policy: If, for any reason, you didn’t order the product in advance and the product is in stock in the store, one of our employees will be more than happy to go get it in the store and sell it to you while you remain in your car. -

@BeeastFarmerThank you for a detailed opinion based on your experiences. This was a post with information to substantiate your opinion, unlike many of the one line posts that is more gut feel with nothing to validate their opinion...now whether someone agrees or disagrees is an individual choice, but at least one can understand how you formulated your opinion... -

Your Best Buy must not have got the corporate memo then that changed that policy...Beginning Sunday, March 22, we will offer contactless curbside service at all locations across the country where state or local laws allow. Rather than ask you to come into our stores, any items you order on BestBuy.com or the Best Buy app will be delivered to your car curbside. If, for any reason, you didn’t order the product in advance and the product is in stock in the store, one of our employees will be more than happy to go get it in the store and sell it to you while you remain in your car. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/clp-global/shop-confidently/pcmcat1584713369767.c?id=pcmcat1584713369767 https://corporate.bestbuy.com/a-note-from-best-buy-about-covid-19/ -

But talking about the virus and it's relation to sports, stores, travel, etc. all will have an influence and impact on when amusement parks re-open and mentioning these other business sectors provides the bigger picture as it relates to amusement parks that others may be missing in their analysis...we cannot look at this in a vacuum...read my documentary on page 37 as to why these discussions are relevant... -

Actually Best Buy changed their policy to curbside and delivery only on March 22nd ... I think it is on topic as it directly relates to that persons position on whether they think the park will open this year or not. They may not be saying that explicitly, but it is certainly implied, especially if you review their prior posts. It is easy to see which ones want the park open ASAP and which ones don't. Whether we agree or not is another story, but one of the freedom's we have in our country is the ability to state our opinion, as long as they do not violate the TOS... (compare our freedom of speech liberties to some other countries...) -

I am sorry to hear that about your job. Hopefully they can get you back sooner. I am sure that some Disney employees are complaining about this settlement, but it is way better than what they have in the current contract and most of us being put through this wish our employers would extend benefits beyond the terms of the original contract! Maybe some other companies are or will follow suit, but this one was relevant to this thread as it does give some insight as to where Disney is at regarding this impacting their parks. -

While what you say is true that these benefits are generally already in union contracts, this is a brand new settlement revision just signed on April 11th specifically in response to COVID-19... The first line of the union statement issued even says "Today, we reached an Agreement with Disney regarding the Company’s decision to furlough its employees starting April 19 because of the COVID-19 crisis." The 2017 Disney Union Contact, that is in effect until October 1, 2022, only called for 30 days of health benefits being provided. Parties to that contract probably would have never imagined Disney would shut down for longer than that. Would any of us had thought that would happen? Disney could have simply told the union they are honoring the previously agreed to contract and they get 30 days of insurance, but instead they sat down at the table and negotiated a new deal for up to 12 months of health insurance benefits at no cost to the employee, as well as some other items of benefit to the employee... How many employers are you aware of that would do that on an existing contract in full force and effect? None that I have worked for would. This will cost Disney significant money when they could have simply pointed to an existing agreement and Disney did not do that. Would your employer do that in the event they have to furlough and it is longer than the 90 days in your union contract? I have no idea where you work, but let's hope your employer doesn't put your co-workers in that situation... Obviously both parties must feel this will be a long term shut-down... -

It was known this was coming but a huge deal worked out at Disney for 43,000 employees furloughed. An important item of the agreement includes a possible idea on how long both sides may think this lasts: Health insurance (including medical, dental, life, etc.) will remain effective for the duration of the furlough up to 12 months, including both full-time workers as well as part-time workers who qualify under the Affordable Care Act. Disney will pay all insurance costs with workers not needing to owe payments when they return to work. https://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/news/2020/04/11/breakingwalt-disney-world-to-furlough-43k-more.html?ana=yahoo&yptr=yahoo -
