Best themed coaster at Cedar Point
purdude86 replied to SonofBaconator's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Haven’t been there for Steel Vengeance yet but I’d say Maverick easily. None of the other coasters really have much theming. Maverick though has the themed queue and station, the tunnel, and all of the rock work and pond that really enhance the ride. Mystic Timbers I think is definitely CF’s strongest theming for a coaster yet. Regardless of overall thoughts of the ride have to admit the theming is great for a regional park on it. The queue/station with the landscaping, crashes truck, camera feeds; the audio on the lift, the overall story, and the shed (which was underwhelming to some but still something more than a basic break run and adding more theming.) -
What ride did KI make the biggest mistake in getting ride of
purdude86 replied to Beasttamer's topic in KI Polls
The two biggest ones to me would be the antique cars and Phantom Theatre. The cars had a beautifully landscaped area and was a ride that people of all ages from little kids to grandparents could have fun with. While I enjoy BLSC it isn’t a major crowd bringer itself, even at opening, and doesn’t utilize the space well or have a picturesque quality to it. Phantom Theatre probably had bigger maintenance costs and issues, especially as it got older, but it was a fantastic ride that again everyone could enjoy. It was really well themed and unique for a regional park as not many had dark rides or at least not to that caliber. It was on par with many classic Disney dark rides and really felt like a midwestern Haunted Mansion. It’s probably the ride I honestly miss the most. -
I agree. People always say stuff about not needing another wooden coaster in parks when they have a couple but fine with having 20 steel coasters if they could. Different wooden coasters can provide vastly different experiences, and especially once you factor in a hybrid like an RMC. An RMC, Beast, Mystic Timbers, and Racer would all give very different rides. Can understand the park side as I believe the steel coasters are easier to maintain.

the only problem to me of the magenta/blue combo is i feel it would be too similar to Banshee. I like green track since we don't have any coasters with that, and having it with brown supports to fit the forest would be great. I also think black tracks with a highlighted color could look really dynamic. Like a black base with the edges of the track matching the supports. The only issue I see is like the white supports it could be hard to keep looking new. the fading would be really obvious on it.

I could see them put one in eventually that’s a more thrilling one like Maverick, but yea with both BLSC and Flight of Fear I doubt its a priority

Always thought those looked fun. Think it could be a good addition to either Planet Snoopy (the seem to be popular for families and kids especially) or in Oktoberfest with the cars themed to giant beer kegs floating in a pond or river. Would love to see a top spin again, think a top scan and/or a sky fly for x-base, and an enterprise would be great for Coney Mall
-
I think Carowinds is far enough away that their addition should t impact KI’s. Same with CW but with Valravn still being new they probably would wait on a dive
-
I agree with most of this. I want a giga or other major coaster but some of these things are needed more to really round out the park. We really need more flat rides at the park. Would be great to get another major flat ride and then a small collection of family rides to spread around. Maybe a big thrilling flat in xbase and a couple family flats around Coney Mall and Oktoberfest. Think a great new dark ride would be great too. Could put it in the old action theatre or crypt building. Then turn Boo Blasters into a Peanuts themed dark ride and make it officially part of the land. Would give them a good expansion for that section and continue to cinch it’s best kids area title with good assortment of rides, log flume, and then a dark ride. Think if they put an antique car ride back in where the stage/petting zoo area it’d be almost impossible for another regional park to beat the kids area.

Well the line for the front row is generally longer so that’s probably why some people get more upset about it. The line for the ride might be 30 minutes and that’s how long you have to wait, but the people in the front row might have waited 45 minutes because of the extra line of people wanting that specific seat. However, I don’t think it should be that big of a problem. It’s not like tons of people are using the pass and one train cycle isn’t adding that much time.
-
That can vary some depending on day or ops too. Was at the park one time with my cousin and she had a cast from a fracture and couldn’t stand in the lines so did the green sheet. However during our visit she was told that she could sit anywhere she wanted except the front row.

Valravn is still great compared to other dove coasters but as an experience in itself is a bit meh. Don’t know why dive coasters never seem to do much. i will grant that Intamin makes some great coasters and Maverick is probably my favorite coaster right now. However while we don’t get off the ride thinking about the maintenance and just the experience, you can bet people think about the downtime a lot when they are unable to ride it all because it is shutdown for some reason. Looking at Lightning Rod it is an amazing coaster but it got talked negatively about a lot and got lots of bad press because of its constant downtime it’s first couple seasons.

I feel like that would fit in a lot better for music in Rivertown. Think it would be perfect for WWC queue or just general music playing throughout Rivertown, but just doesn’t sound like a fit for Coney Mall to me.

The main three I’d want to see is a blitz style coaster like Maverick, a giga, and a ground up RMC. think a blitz coaster would be a great replacement for BLSC. Keep a similar feel there but could get better theming and better use of the whole area. Currently only about half the space is used and it could cross over the path and use the grassy area by Diamondback too. Think giving it a horse/steeplechase theme would make a great transitioning theme between Coney Mall and Rivertown as well. A horse themed motocoaster like at Coney Island would work too. Just make it do more than the back and forth of that ones layout. The other big change I wouldn’t mind seeing is to have Congo Falls taken out and moved to Soak City, and either remove, or move to another area in the park, Invertigo. Then could use the space of those two rides to put in a Mack water coaster. This would keep a water type ride and something with the spirit of Congo Falls there but would be more fun and fit in better to that area of the park as well. Congo I think would be great for a high capacity and easy to get wet ride in Soak City. Could see the bridge itself being a popular way to get wet and cool off. I know lots of people avoid it now unless it’s teally hott because they don’t want to get soaked. Will do RFYLCB and WWC together then get dry and not want to be wet again.

I don't think it needs to make any major changes, but I would like to see some seasonal overlays. Some stuff like zombies or other monsters and Halloween type music such as "Thriller" playing on the radio during Haunt. And then do the same for Christmas. Like have Krampus on the screen, maybe still have the tree but give it a wintery background and pssobily some garland or decorations hanging off it, then play Christmas music like Last Christmas on the radio.

I actually think Antique cars would be a great addition to that area of the park. Think instead of a coaster they could put them in the space where the theater and petting zoo are and give a nice layout. Would be a great addition that people of all ages could enjoy as well. Think we have a decent coaster line up but adding another eventuallly would be ok, but think more of a family style would be good like a wild mouse.
-
Paramount also would let upkeep on the major theming slide a bit. Tomb Raider even had numerous effects and lights go out and not get replaced. I agree Cedar Fair has been doing a good job overall with theming. Think Mystic Timbers is at a great level of theming for a regional park.
-
Yea the theming of the ride was great. The ride itself was just ok. Since it was so big it couldn’t do as much as the standard top spins, but the theming and experience made it amazing and one of my favorite rides in the park. Think that’s part of why it failed as The Crypt. The ride needed the theming to excel. I loved our ride but almost wish we had gotten one like Kings Dominion so maybe it would still be around. Hoping they will at least salvage the queue portion for a new attraction as it would make a great mine shaft themed queue that would fit well in that area.

Totally random under rated things in the park
purdude86 replied to YOULLBEBACK's topic in Kings Island
I like Mystic Timbers a lot and the theming is great for the park. However, one o my favorite things was teh walk through the woods and overall seclusion of White Water Rapids. Being surrounded by the trees just really took you out of the park and felt it enhanced the rapids ride by giving it a secluded feeling of being out in the woods away from everything. Just a couple spots where you could see some hills of Diamondback sticking out and things. Now have Mystic Timbers criss-crossing over and around it. -
Oktoberfest could definitely use some sprucing up but agree that there isn’t really room for a big addition like a coaster. Could see some smaller changes though like a family flat or two added and definitely an overhaul of the Festhaus to make it nicer and more Bavarian feeling inside and fix the Glockenspiel. Maybe even a renovation of Adventure Express with some new effects and a more European feel and theming to fit in better with Oktoberfest (I know the 11th commandment but if done well this could really improve the ride and I would be open to this change. Give it a kind of cross between how it is now and Verbolten.) I see X-Base or Coney getting the giga.
-
Maybe could do a bit of both. Tear down the main building and keep the indoor queue for the line. Could put a Screamin' Swing there with the queue winding through a mine and the ride itself outside with a mining tower theme (similar to the Tower of Terror coater shown below).
-
I think the Crypt area really needs a flat or dark ride more than a coaster, though I'd be ok with a nicely themed coaster for the area similar to Mystery Mine as well. But Rivertown already has 3 major coasters (including the park's signature coaster and 2 of the most recent ones with one being the tallest) so I don't really think another coaster is needed in that section. However, outside of those all they have is WWC and the train, these is no real flat rides in that area and a better variety would be great.
-
I'm always so mixed on this aspect myself. All of that stuff really helps to amp you up for the parks and really thinking about, and as you said gives you a channel for your excitement for your trip. However, I feel like once you are there so much of your trip is planned out and scheduled fully without wiggle room. Kind of miss just going to the parks and grabbing a fast pass when you get there and wander around and do what you want when. Now you pretty much have to hav ea game plan going in that you stick to for the entire stay. Nice that Disneyland has that still. And since they ahve a large AP base I understand why they didn't update it.
-
I feel like a Gerstlauer-style coaster similar to Mystery Mine would be great and fit in really well with the area. But a flying theatre would be a great addition to the park and give a more varied ride line up.

I would save Canada's Wonderland for 2019 if possible as they will have a new major coaster that year. I haven't been to Hershey Park or Carowinds but both look great adn on my list to get to eventually. KK and Dollywood are both great though. KK has two amazing coasters with Lightning Run and Storm Chaser and it has a good water park, plus teh two days for $30 is a great deal. Dollywood is a fun park as well and Lightning Rod is one of the best coasters I've been on. The Pigeon Forge Gatlinburg area is great as well and can build an entire vacation around it. So oculd hit Kentucky Kingdom on the way down or back then do a few days in Gatlinburg and hit up Dollywood.

I always felt a steeplechase coaster could be a great addition. The style of the ride and horse themed vehicles would make for a nice fit for both Rivertown and Coney Mall as well and make a nice transitional type theme and attration that straddles the two. Could be a fun multi launch twister style layout as well.
